Do people with the 16 valve cars ever mess around with valve timing?
What my mechanic told me is that from the factory the S in particular had a rough idle because of the timing issue. He said that most mechanics that know this have already adjusted it. This also increases the hp in the higher RPM's. I assume that he knows what he is talking about because he has been a P-car mechanic for almost 30 years now.

listen to this guy carefully^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^He speaks in short concise sentences. Once he does so, you are best off to ask him to elaborate and prehaps make some reccomendations. He's one of the most experienced "non-professional" 944 guys on this board.

Getting horsepower out of the 2.5L engine is the same as any other normally aspirated engine, its not rocket science and its not impossible no matter what some of the people on this forum will tell you.

Get a more aggressive cam, bump compression, install better flowing intake, worked over 16V head, exhaust manifold, and spin the engine higher utilizing pro level engine management. The problem is, you'll end up spending a lot of money for an engine that is absolutely terrible on the street and makes less horsepower than even a mildly modified 951.

If you're building the engine for the racetrack thats another story. Though then I'd tell you the only reason to do this would be because of class restrictions in the venue you wish to race in.

PS - Almost forgot, if you want to max out this engine, plan on replacing almost everything short of the block itself as there are a lot of weak links that become apparent as output and rpms increase.

Are you sure?
It sounds like your mechanic was talking about cam timing.

appears that doubling the power of a 2.5 na has been done.i saw 944cs kill a 944 modded turbo at pocono last year.by the way that turbo guy [red turbo] was just bragging up his car because he had just whipped a modded 350 z

I shouldn't have said double, poor word choice. but 100hp more is realistic.
