Default 944S cylinder head cover bolts...

I need to order some new bolts for the cylinder head cover/valve cover on my '87 944S. According to the PET, there are 10 long bolts and 3 short ones. This doesn't make sense to me since I'm counting 4 shorts and 9 longs on the engine. Can someone help me out with this? Is the PET wrong?

It should be 10 and 3 for the 944S engine, the 944S2 968 had 9 and 4........do you have an S2 or a 968 engine hiding under there?

Call Rennbay for bolts......

That's just it, I don't have all of the bolts. I bought this car broken and with the head already off. All the part were supposed to be with the car, but as I'm finding out, some are inevitably missing.

Sharky, if there are 10 longs and 3 shorts, which corner of the cover has the longer bolt?

I hope this new head isn't an S2 head. It bolted up without a problem. If it is, would it work on a 2.5 block?

Very smart move to do. I'm VERY pleased with mine. I have installed and removed them over a dozen times with no troubles at all. Very good investment.

I've seen the rennbay bolts and they are very nice. I am currently building out my turbo engine and I used their head exhaust studs and I am very pleased with them.

So these are the infamous $22.00 and $11.00 bolts for the cam/head cover on the 16V, right (i.e. 92810411101)? IIRC, the ones which are torqued to 6ftlbs and should be replaced and which strip or break really easily and cause a major hassle?

Tell me about these rennbay bolts. I checked the site and couldn't find them. They are replacements for the OEM stuff? More durable? I'm going to be in there doing the chain tensioner and if there's a better choice than the OEM for replacement, I'm very interested in hearing about it. Thanks!

oh dear,

6ftilbs and replace as they will shear off.
causing you to drioll them out and if the stud puller thingy snaps in there like it did to me its a bitch to take that out as well.

how I felt when I snapped the screws off

Yes, do not torque them too much as they have a stop. So any more torquing will not result in more clamping in case you are worried the rocker cover gasket will leak. So is better for them to come loose then snapping them off next time you want to have the cover off. And yes when you want to take them off and they appear stubborn be very patient. Alway do it with engine cold and do not apply excessive force. If they not move go away and come back and try again a few times. Eventually they can loosen up this way and they come out.

And yes on my S2 I have 4 short and 9 long bolts. Can't see why the S will be different though? PET is clearly wrong in the case of S2 as the quote 3 & 10.

I was sent a set of 10 long/ 3 short from rennbay. I sent a message back and the quickly resolved the issue. There are 9 long/ 4 short on an S2. I should know having undone them over a dozen times. I torque to 7ft/lbs every time.

These bolts are very nice, and cheap too at about $110 bucks or so. Very high quality, tolerances are very tight (good thing) and they DO NOT strip. They have extra deep heads which is very nice. Even with a ball end socket, the socket strips before the bolt even begins to think about stripping. When you first get them, run all of the bolts into the holes with the cover off. Since the tolerances are tight and there will be junk in the holes, the bolts feel like they're stripping. They are not though, it's just how tight the tolerances are and this is why you want to thread them in without the cover.

To get an idea of the quality (if you get the bolts), thread in a factory bolt in one hole and a rennbay bolt in another (thread in about an 1/8 of an inch), and see how much more wobble the factory bolt has to it in the hole. Very impressive and well worth every penny.

Plus they're shiny!

Hi there.

Did a search on cam cover bolts (or "pan-head screw" as they are named in the PET), and this 3 year old thread popped up.

Apparently no bolts available from Rennbay any more, and I can't find them at Paragon either.

Any tips on where to source these bolts for a reasonable price?

Thanks.
