Alternator Warning Light on 85/2 to 89 Cluster???
Would someone with a 85/2 to 89 944 do me a favor?
Walk, don't run, out to your car and turn on the ignition without starting the car.
Is there a battery light near the voltmeter that lights up?
In my 87 944 NA owners manual, it says that there is one and I'm unsure as to whether or not the manual is correct.
Thanks in advance.

No, I got no such warning light. There is, however, a little picture of a battery next to the voltmeter, but it does not light up. It is presumably there to label the voltmeter as such.

the lite comes on with the key and goes off when the car starts.
if the lite doesn't come on with the key, the batt won't charge and you won't know if you have an alternator failure, other than lites going dim, voltage dropping until it finally quits.

When I was trying to work out the wiring for my smaller alternator swap, I found out that is a charge warning light, not a low voltage light as I always thought was.
I just checked and on my car the light does not come on when the key is on, car not running. I do know for a fact the light is there and does work because that is what I used to determine if my new alternator was wired correctly or not. When it was not charging, the light was on regardless of voltage.

Ok... your Oil pressure should not be pegged at 5 when the ignition is on.
And there IS an Alternator warning light.
If voltage is lost, this light as well as the ! light will illuminate.

On my car, the light under the voltmeter would come on when charge was lost. I was playing around trying to find which wire on my new alternator was the
field wire. I had a new fully charged battery plus a 20 amp charger on it so voltage was still up while I was testing this last summer. When the alternator was not charging, the light illuminated eventhough I still had 12+ volts. As soon as I connected the right wire the light turned off. This tells me it is a low amperage warning lamp and not a low voltage lamp. As you can see in the gauge pic, the amp light does not come on only when voltage is low but the "!" does light up if that is what you are referring to.

So to summarize this thread
'!' comes on when voltage is too low
When amps (or charge) is too low, the Voltmeter warning light comes on [little one next to the battery]. Mine comes on when the key is in the ON position, which makes sense because the alternator is not pushing out enough (any) amps!
(Doing research as I was driving home, my voltage apparently kept going down and down, now it sits at 12v (home now)... which I've never seen it that low... I wonder if my alternator quit but I have no warning lights so I don't think so. No voltmeter today either).
I seem to be okay. Voltage back up where I am used to. Will still put a meter on it.
