Default Tiptronic - Hmm - maximum input power?

Total newby here, and speculating about what retrofitting turbo/supe options exist for 968's with Tips... Turbo sites like PowerHaus detail what they will do to your manual 6Sp when you go with boosty retrofits but don't say much about Tip cars. I understand and agree that manual cars are generally way friendlier to high output (boosted) motoring - driver defines input power and shift points, too...

Input torque and torque applied before-after upshift on a Tip car would be a cause for concern, roasted clutch packs, etc. So, does anyone have info or experience on the maximum input horsepower that a 968 Tip can take, or has this been a verboten topic? Converter stall-speed options?

Thx/Tim

In five + years, I've never seen this topic. so I won't post this...
but, you should ask this question on the 968 board. There are quite a few turboed 968's there with a great deal of tech to help.
My guess is that you would do better to remove the tip and transplant a 951s gearbox, but others may disagree.

I don't know anything about the 968 tiptronic transmission except that it was new technology.

What I do know, is that the 928 auto tranny can handle more power than the manual tranny. Also, 993s and newer turbo cars are offered with tiptronic so that might indicate the tip tranny can take the beating. But then again the 968 tip unit could/might be very different than the 993 tip and 928 auto units.

On a side note, I think it's a waste (of parts AND your own time) to put a turbo on a tip. It will ruin the whole potency and effect of the boost buildup. If you want power you should emphasize your search on supercharger options. Just my 2 cents!

Thanks ehall and FRporscheman! I'll sniff it out on the 968 Tech forum. Rgds/Tim

I'll give some input, since I have seriously considered doing this very thing. I personally think it would be a VERY effective combination for a turbo package. For one thing, its gearing should allow you to take advantage of the torque band of a properly designed install. Secondly, I have discussed this with a few folks who should have a pretty good idea about it (factory trained guys with YEARS of experience) and they think it will handle it up to around 400rwhp without problem, with one notable point of concern being the flex plate (no one really knows how much power that can take, the guess is that it will wear faster but should still handle the power). Also, you should be able to refit the 993 tip paddleshift steering wheel to control it without removing your hands from the steering wheel.

If I ever wreck my 951 beyond repair or if I find a Horizon Blue 968 coupe, I'll be building a 968 turbo with a tip and will tell you all about it!
