short shifter opinions
I'd like to shorten the throw of my transmission. I did a search to try & ascertain which transmission mounted short shifter was the best quality / performance & both of the most popular (schnell & weltmeister) seemed to have issues. I don't really have a budget, but for some reason the Performance Products just seems over priced & I don't trust the ebay options.
Anyone had a positive experience with the install & use of a short shifter??
Thanks

You could modify the stock one.

I might end up buying one. My car came with a broken piece of the linkage (don't know the official name, but in the picture posted by joonas its the piece that was shortened with the set screw that attaches to the rod coming out of the tranny). I might have a resource to get another one, but if i don't i'll just get the short throw kit and be done with it.

I actualy bought the $60.00 ebay one, listed as "German short shifter" or something. The fit was very tight, so I just busted out some polishing cloth and opened the hole just a little bit and have had no issues to date.
It's very wierd having a shifter that is THAT positively engauged after driving with the old set up where you could seriously bang throught the gears because it was so worn out. The new shorter one is stiffer, but i'm starting to get used to it. Of course, when I pulled my shift boot up to check the condition of the lever, I found my linkage was being held to the shift lever with a wire-tie. No C-clip, just a wire-tie, and it was wallowed out so bad, it was like tossing a hot dog down a hallway.

I've had the Performance Products short shifter on mine for about 4 years. It has a design flaw on the end of the shaft with the flat lever on it. The "weld" (looks more like a press fit) came loose, stranding me a good distance from home. I Dremeled a slot across the end of the shaft and lever, put a short piece of steel rod in it, then brazed the whole thing. I told them about what happened, they offered me a new one, but I kept the one I fixed as I know it's much stronger than a new one. It does work well though.

There is one other option The Stuttgart Motorsports BLOCK. It replaces the plastic piece and changes the geometry slightly.

I have one but have not put it in. I also have a Schnell installed and it works fairly well. It is a bit notchy and sometimes I miss second. I am going to try the Stuttgart and see if it is any smoother as they claim.

How do shortened levers like the Lindsey racing version shorten the throw? Is it simply you have a shorter lever so it feels shorter or is there and actual geometry change that occurs?
