Default myth of msd coil?

Hi I bought msd blaster 2 coil to use in my 86 951, I didn't buy yet the msd 6a ignition box, i was getting ready to replace the coil with new blaster2
My only concern is that in the instructions it said to install an 8ohm balast resistor on the positive side of the coil for a stock repalcement install.. It dident come with one.. and ofcourse that one of those things that everyone just keeps around the house..

I went ahead and installed it anyway (and prayed for it not to kill me)

seemed to work great.. idles a little better cruse is a little smoother as well.. reading there is alot of speculation about fry your dme , coil aftermark coils, with out the famous balaster!! somepeople in othere treat run without problems but fact is i don't want to fry my dme,
I plan to run the car for a couple months like that and then buy the 6a msd box, to complement the coil, what is right way to go ? where buy ballaster resistor is a real need in both cases
----- using blaster 2 coil
------using balster coil and msd 6a box

I have the blaster coil, no resistor, no box, and am going on four years with it now.

Try someone like jegs or summit racing for the resistor.

Isn't the resistor used to fix a potential problem with the tach signal making the tach go bonkers in some applications?

Well, it might have something to do with the MSD coils being designed to recieve 480 volts from the CD box, and not 12 volts that your DME wants to give it.

Sure it will work, but hold your finger on the ignition driver of your DME after a long drive.....go on, I dare you.

I run a Jacobs which plugs into the stock coil for the signal, so no change to the signal back to the DME. Seems to work great, but you'll need to space out the plug gap to get the full effect.

I've never heard of this and I've run with a jacobs coil for 3 years without problems.

With the Jacobs, how are you hooking it up?

I bought the ignition tuneup kit from lindsy racing and it came with the blaster coil and I asked him the same question and the responce was run as is and it is fine. ?? Not being and elecrical wizard I will go with the recomendation of Lindsey. It seams to be working fine.

One could argue the coil was designed to run on lower voltage and will run hotter and perhaps fail sooner without one. You could ohm both coils and see how different they are.

O why the company sale the balastar resistor???? I run car just with upgraded coil and it start just first crank, acceleration feels really smoth, i didn't want to drive for long scare of burn out my dme ? So should I keep using car like that or take coil off and wait until msd box arrive and install pack with out resistor ballaster??? more experinces?
pd, by the way in almost very post I read there is guy jnoh seem owner of vitesse motor or somthing he didn;t recommend at all msds products but he offers his products in steed!!

The ballast resister while it drops the voltage is really to control amperage through the driver (transister in an ignitor or dme). If the resistance through the primary windings is the same it should be ok.
