2.7L Performance Upgrades
#16
You should look at buying a 944 - even a 2.5 - that doesn't need a rebuilt motor. It will save you lots of time and money. To get a real 15% increase in an N/A takes thousands of dollars and *will* sacrifice driveability.

im guessing theres a good reason for not just using a low-compression 3.0L engine...ease of installation? that picture up there looks like a turbo intake manifold bolts onto the head.

If I were looking for serious upgrade, I would purchase an S2 or a second turbo. It would be a lot less expensive than upgrading the 2.7L and provide a better balanced and more reliable car.
This project is about building a car for my wife to drive on DE days (I will have the turbo and my wife dislikes my Mustang GT convertible - Daily driver). I would also like a good car for PCA road trips. My turbo has been modified and is not pleasant on long trips. I considered getting her a Boxer, but it is too small for me to fit in it. I liked the idea of the 2.7L since it is just little different than what everyone else is driving and I still fit in it. Plan B would be to buy an S2, Turbo-S or 968 for her.

Honestly if i could have my way. a S2 as a daily driver and a 951 as a track car would be my realistic 'dream' garage.
Tom R. might want to chime in here.. hes been through three S2's, a 951 (which is currently part of my stable now) and a '89 2.7L . And whats funny is ive known him during these 5 Porsche's and maybe had some slight influence on which one he ended up with in the end (an S2).

Try to lose 200lbs of weight out of the car. It will give the same effect as 15% more power, and it will also help the braking/handling. Delete the spare, rear wiper, sunroof motor, rear seats, and AC. Then get a 951 or euro 944 front bumper (polyurethane, lighter than steel), and maybe a lexan hatch.

If my offer is accepted, I was considering having the motor rebuilt with the following modifications:
- Lighten, cross drill and knife edge crank
- Mild port and polish head and intake manifold
- Increase compression from 10.9 to 11.5 to 1 (custom pistons)
- Replace the catalytic converter with high flow unit
. Any ideas on what type of performance increase would come from these modifications? ?

Since factory driveability is a goal, I do not want pursue weight. The power options make the car more enjoyable to drive and spare tires are critical equipment for long trips.
My 2,600 lb 951 is mostly carbon fiber and fiberglass. It has no sound proofing (from factory), no air conditioning, no sunroof and no power seats. The lack of sound proofing and stiff suspension make it almost on unbearable for long trips. This new car would replace the 951 for PCA events.

Seattle,
contact Kelly Moss Motorsports. They are very knowledgable (sometimes do contract work for Porsche Motorsport NA) and might be able to help you out with your headwork and cam. They might however be too busy with their race department.

The fendors and hood needed replacement when I got the car. Replacing them with carbon fiber and fiberglass was not signficantly more expensive than replacing with stock components.
Since I wanted to make substantial modifications to the car, I purposely looked for one that needed a lot of work. This one was chosen because of the lack of sound proofing, AC and power options. I wanted to start with as light a platform as possible.
Was it worth it? Yes, as a hobby but not as a practical vehicle. My 951 is fun on DE days and for driving around on the weekends. However, I would no consider it as a daily driver. I drive a 2007 Ford Mustang GT convertible on a day to day basis since I need absolute reliability and options such as bluetooth hands free phone and satellite navigation.
