Double the clutch. It takes some extra effort but it will quickly become second nature.

this may sound obvious, but check to make sure the boot isn't bunching up. Especially in cold weather, the shift boot can put up a fight going into gear. This happens on my Jeep all the time. If I don't keep my hand on the shifter when it's cold, the boot will push it out of gear.

I always have to rev a little upshifting or the car will jar when it gets into gear...

okay I found a way not to crunch the gears going into second.

until now I've been reving and accelerating in 1st gear and then stepping on the clutch waiting a second or 2 and then shifting into second and then it usually crunches.

I'm thinking the speed of the car may not be high enough so that's why it's crunching? makes sense or no?

today I tried reving it a bit higher about 3000-3500 rpm in 1st gear and if I shift really fast it actually doesn't grind. So if I get the speed up and shift quickly when the revs and speed is still high for 1st gear then it won't grind.

anyone know why??

this is actually better for me as now I can just do fast shifts into second gear and no grinds, I thought I was help by stepping on the clutch and then shifting slowly.

be careful with really fast shifts

and if you have a syncro problem, in a short period of time you will find out, because it never goes away and needs to be fixed

also, hardest shifts are always 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, so if your car didn't grind into 2nd all the time - I'd say not to worry about it

you should still check your linkage, it's the easiest thing to check, and if it is bent or there is something wrong with it, it's not too expensive compared to transmission/rebuild

how many of you are pretend clutching and shifting in your chairs in front of the computer, trying to explain how you shift? LOL!!!!!!
It will get to the point it will start popping out of gear, then start tearing up your dogears, then you can learn how to shift from 1st to 3rd.Wondering were you can find a new or rebuilt tranny ($1800-2500).OR!!!!! replace a $32-74.00 dollar sycro before you destroy 2nd gear set @ $500+ shipping.
I have thourghly enjoyed your shifting seminar thou. You guys crack me up!!!!!!

don't forget the syncros are likely the originals...20 years old, and made of bronze. not exactly made for quick shifts and being slammed into gear. blip the throttle and ease it into 2nd and it should avoid the grind. the grinding also will be more prominant when the transaxle oil is cool after first start up too.

+1 on blipping the throttle between shifts. I've done this occasionally on really cold days and it really smooths everything out.

Accelerate in first (I usually shift at 3k-3.5k but whatever works for you), push in the clutch, tap the gas, shift into second, depress the clutch.

Or you can double clutch.. Accelerate in First, push in the clutch, shift to neutral, depress the clutch, tap the gas, push in the clutch, shift into second, depress the clutch. If you get good at it, you can do all of this in one sweeping motion.

I try not to use my transmission for slowing down the car. If anything I only downshift while slowing down so I'm in the right gear to accelerate once I've reached my target speed. Ie. Catching up to slower traffic, a great place to practice heel-toe shifting while slowing down.

well shifting it faster than i normally do seems to stop the grind. i usually shift really slow going into second. wait like 2 seconds then shift into second and that makes it grind more often. when I shift righ away after depressing the clutch it won't grind.

as long as you don't hear a grind you're not doing damage right?

I guss the transmission will eventually need to be replaced but I want to make it last as long as possible.

problem is finding a good used transmission, I have a feeling most used transmissions are going to have a grinding second gear as it seems common with 944s.

my old 924 would grind into second gear all the time as well.

also how exactly does blipping the throttle help stop the grinding? when the clutch is depressed you're just reving the engine, so how does that help?

theres a guy close to me that is selling all the parts from his 944 and he has an extra transmission but I wouldn't really know if it's any better than mine.

swapping a transmission can't be that hard right? hardest job I've done is an oil pan gasket/ motor mount replacment and it wasn't fun. transmission doesn't look to bad.

As long as you have someone to help, its not too bad. Make sure they are good with a jack handle. Almost had a 944 transaxle crush my head when my jack man wasn't paying attention.

hmm I'm guessing you'd need a special jack, like a motorcycle jack or something to lift it up into place.

anyways not planning on doing it anytime soon. I'd only replace it if i actualy lose a gear not just because it grinds sometimes.
