Default how much should a new cat cost?

wow i think my post about me looking for a cat got deleted. cool!

anyway.. my mechanic wants to charge me like 800 bucks for a new cat.. which i find almost as amusing as my post being deleted, but not quite.

i see some really cheap (like 50 dollars) cats on ebay that are supposedly for 944s (but the shape of them doesnt really look right.) would one of those be ok to use though? wheres the best/cheapest place to get a proper cat for a 944S?

thank you (if this post doesnt get deleted.)

I found out last weekend that putting a used cat on a car is "illegal". Don't let that stop you but a shop probably won't put a used one on for you.

If you bought a used cat off ebay, you could just install it yourself and not be concerned if the mechanic is afraid to for legal concerns.

Someone on here was recently parting out an S so you might want to do a quick search and see if they still have it~~

Make sure you get one specifically for the S model. I have heard they are different from the normal N/A, I think it is the connection the headers that is different.

Or just get an aftermarket cat for 40-60 bucks and have someone cut yours out and weld the new one in for probably under 100

I've been wrong before, but I believe the 951 cat is different.

Seems like the 951 cat has that extra bypass pipe on it, so without modification and welding I doubt it will work on an NA.

Excellent quality Magnaflow universal cats are $60-70 at Summit Racing and your local muffler shop will weld it in for under $100 - at least mine does. I put one in my 911SC ($60 cat + $60 labor) and it passed California smog test with flying colors. Totally legal too.

*cough* Operator, I live in CT, have the exhaust system off of my wrecked 944S, and just PMed you *cough*

Whatever you do, the S system is different from an 8V. The muffler also has an offset outlet, IIRC.
