Default Car won't start...

Ok, so I'm having this problem that I've put off for a little while, and now I'd like to get it resolved.

Bottom line, when I turn the key to start the car, the fuel pump doesn't turn on.

When I turn the key, nothing.

However, I've run a direct line from the POSITIVE lead on the fuel pump, and connect it directly to the battery, and then I can start the car. When I attempt to start the car with the fuel pump hooked up directly, it usually takes two 5 second periods of cranking to get it to start (and then it starts and idles perfectly fine).

Now, I've replaced the DME relay with a brand new one, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I also have a brand new ignition lock and switch. I ALSO have checked all the fuses and THEY are good as well. I also don't have that factory Porsche alarm either.

What could it be?

Thanks!

It sounds like a fuel pump issue. It sounds like it is a weak fuel pump, I would try replacing that. I can get you a new one if you like

what happens if you replace the DME relay with a jumper can you get the fuel pump to run?

have you checked for continuity at the fuse?

double check clarks garage for how to make a jumper for the DME, IIRC you have to jumper pins 30-87-87b.
If you put in the jumper and the pump doesnt run, then check the terminals for the pump with a voltmeter for 12v.

The jumper works regardless of the ignition switch.

I have a brand new fuel pump that I was saving for my 924S and the used known good pump from the car.

If you want the new one you can have it for $75+ship or the used one you can have for $40+ship either one will work in your 84

Thanks guys! Great advice. I'll check it out this afternoon and let you know. I figured the fuel pump is good as I can get the car to run and drive just fine when I wire it up directly to the battery.

I'll check it out later today!

Thanks!!!

I'm betting on a wiring issue or a bad fuse

Heres a couple of wiring tests you can run, if jumpering the DME relay dosent help. Take a DVOM and place on terminal 87b of the DME relay, you need to connect in such a way that the relay is in place but you can get a reading from the pin. place the other lead on the pos input to the pump. This reading is the voltage drop of that wire it shouldnt be much, less than .5 is ideal. That has to be measured with the car running. Next place one lead on the ground terminal of the pump and a good ground point. This is thesting the ground side of the circuit, again .5 or less is ideal. If there is resistance in either the Pos. or Neg. feeds this consumes some of the supplied voltage, which could explain why it takes a couple trys to get the pump going, it normally takes twice as much power to start something than to maintain it. It could also be a bad pump, that has a dead spot inside, the direct line from the Batt is enough to get it going.

HTH

When you say "When I turn the key, nothing" does this mean the engine doesn't crank, or the engine cranks but doesn't turn over?
