Default Failed VA Emissions

I need some help here. I just failed my VA emissions test at the local Goodyear and the mechanic (claims to be an ex-HBL guy) says it is timing related. My HC ppm and CO% are way off while the NO ppm is quite low. The last time I had passed emissions was 2005, I think.

Since then I have done the following:
Replaced O2 sensor
Installed WBO2 sensor (Zeitronix)
Replaced ignition wires, plugs, rotor, distributer and coil

Per my Zeitronx read out, I am high 11's low 12's for AFR but the mechanic says I did not fail for richness of fuel. Disregard the fact it says I have 911 turbo...clearly wrong.

What gear were you in when they did it. First time I had to do this in Cali, they tried running the car in 3rd. Terrible numbers. I replaced the Cat and ran a bottle of Techron through the system. You may want to change the fuel filter as well, but I'm not so sure if using the wrong car model will affect the numbers you have to meet. 944 (4 cyl 2.5L NA) is not the same as 911 (6 cyl 3.3L Turbo).

Dude! Dont go to that goodyear.

They all pretend they know everything while they charge you up the *** for tires.

I went to take my 951 there for an emissions test (the coupe) and the ******* just looked at it and said "it failed im not even gonna test it" and I was like why?

and he said "It might have an exhaust leak"

Lousailor,
I meant to add, the fuel pump is new and the injectors were rebuilt and matched. What I am confused about is the fact he is claiming it is a timing issue. I do not understand combustion enough to grasp why that would be the case. Especially since my 951 does not have adjustable timing. I didn't expect the incorrect model, engine and displacement would have a bearing on the numbers, but I did ask and they said that would not make a difference.

Rock,
I have a free reinspection coming to me if done in 14-days (13 now). I am going to give them one more shot. I have never had any problems with them in the past. I have only used them for inspections and I have always passed with flying colors with all my cars.

Just out of curiosity, did you have all the mode in your sig when you did emissions 2 years ago?

The only mod I had back then....and I will have to double check this would be the Weltmeister chips and the K&N cone filter.

One thing to note is that when I installed the replacement o2 sensor (not the WBO2) I did have to splice it into the existing wiring. Meaning I did not get an oem one that had the correct plugs to connect to the wiring harness. I use the quicklock connectors and did not solder.

I reduced my CO and HC numbers quite a bit by replacing the DME temp sensor. Mine was the original part and is easy to change and about $25. This gizmo richens up the mixture when the coolant temp is low. They evidently wander a bit with age.

Make sure the car is at operating temperature when you do it. (The test that is)

My 87 failed VA emissions because of the chip (Autothority). Took me several attempts to realize this. Once I put the OEM chip back in there were no problems. There is a shop in Leesburg that really worked with me even though I never use them (my shop does not do emissions).

Those numbers really look like the O2 sensor isnt working though.

I would make sure you did the 02 sensor right.

I did what you did, trying to fix my horrible gas mileage, and I still got 270 miles per tank.

Then i went back and RE did my o2 sensor making sure everything was ok. Plugged it back in, and revved the car. I went outside and saw that it had spit black carbon chips.

My miles per tank are now around 410.

HUMMMMMM My gas mileage has been *** for a while now. ~200 miles a tank. I did not put two and two together. I will double check my wiring again.

Rock, what did you use to splice in the new O2 sensor? I am trying to use the existing plug but am having trouble finding a pin extractor tool.

PM sent with a sure-fire way to pass emissions that does not cost any money!

Well, strike two! I dialed back the fuel and checked (redid) my o2 sensor connections. My numbers are closer, but still way off the mark. I asked them what gear and RPM they perform the test at and they state they only do it at the specified MPH. To add insult to injury, I had to pay again since the last day of my free reinspect was yesterday......and they were closed for Thanksgiving

Anyhow, I am getting to think my o2 sensor may be bad so I may go and buy another to see what happens. I was running rich for a while and I am guessing it could have damaged the sensor.

Rock what kind of 02 sensor did you get since my mileage is *** too, barely 240 to a tank, mostly city driving.

I am going to change my 02 sensor when I get my scivision MAF and maxHP chips

My O2 sensor had never been replaced. When I replaced it I went from pass to fail on CO here in Wisconsin. It finally occured to me that a PO had adjusted the AFM with a bad O2 sensor to pass a Maryland test. The plug had been drilled out so someone had played with it. The thing had drifted to indicate a lean mixture so the car ran rich. So I adusted the CO with the new sensor and passed. I ended up going 2.5 turns leaner. The following thread was a huge help:
