Default Temptation - how much understeer with 250 fronts and stock t-bars?

I finally have all the stuff to do my front suspension work and am extremely tempted to go ahead and install it (paragon coil-over conversion with 250lb springs, dynatech camber plates), but I realized that sticking the new stuff in the front could potentially make the car handle like crap since I still have the stock t-bars in the rear.

Anybody have any knowledge as to how bad the understeer would be if I were to run the 250lb front springs with the stock t-bars? It would be understeer, correct?

Anyway, any insight would be greatly appreciated.

yes it would understeer

getting a bigger rear swaybar (if you don't already) would be a good move until you get bigger torsion bars
especially since that's pretty cheap

Just run it with no gas in the tank, the carpet out of the back, and no spare, and the increased rake will get you some loss of rear traction as long as you're not stomping the gas

I already have the weltmeister sways front and rear, so 29 solid front and 22 solid rear, or whatever size they are.

Damnit, I want to install my shiney parts but don't want the car to handle like crap.

I have 200# front and stock rear torsion, no more understeer noted here.

Are you running the car on the track or on the street?

Ive got 200lb fronts and stock rear torsion bars. I played around with tire pressures, dampening and sway bar combinations to dial out the understeer. Not the best way to balance the suspension but its worked well for me. Im sure you can do the same.

Bill I am in pretty much the same situation as you (see avatar and sig), except that the setup I got has 200# springs. I am going to go ahead and try it. Nothing to loose really except a few hours of my time.

I had the same setup on my n/a. 250# front springs, stock torsions, and welt 28/22 sways.
  • For street use it was a non-issue. It's not like you're pushing the limits of the car on the way to work.
  • For Autocross the understeer made turn-ins difficult.
  • For track use the understeer was manageable using trailbraking and throttle steering. Not ideal, but it worked, and the 250#ers up front helped keep the fenders off the tires.

Ok, thanks for the information everyone.

This will be for street use, so it sounds like the understeer should be managable. I plan on doing new torsion bars before I do any autocross/track events, so it shouldn't be an issue for that.
