Default Power Steering Leak recommendation

I have a leaking pressure line from the power steering pump to the rack. When I turn the wheel hard it just pours out from w/in the insulation over the hose. It doesn't appear to be leaking from the pump connection. Maybe the rack end but I couldn't see that well. Other than the two ends of the hose, there's no other potential leaking points correct?

Maybe I should just order the seals since I will need them anyway and drop the hose and inspect it and order if I need it.

Anyone else had this line fail and have input? Thanks.

The hose itself could have cracked from old age. I think its just a rubber hose between the end connections.

Hoses don't just leak at the ends. Even if it's not cracked visibly, old rubber hoses can have developed fractures and pores, through which fluid can seep. Replace the hose and the 2 copper (or aluminum) washers at each banjo bolt. But to start with, just try tightening the banjo bolts to the proper torque spec (loosen them a bit then torque them). Maybe there's just a loose bolt.

For the time being, take off your PS belt so you stop losing fluid. If your rack gets air in it, your steering will become unpredictable and that could be dangerous.

I just had my mechanic replace the oil pan gasket in my 944. While he had that portion of the engine disassembled, he said it would be wise and cost effective to also do the power steering pressure hose, so I agreed as I usually do (ounce of prevention is worth ...). Anyhow, once he had the part off, turns out it was seeping and probably would have caused me problems later on anyhow. So - yes, there's someone else out here with this problem and I fixed it by replacing the whole thing. BTW, the bill for my oil pan gasket and this part was very high due to the many hours of labor involved. FYI.

I didn't realize the line was partially rubber until I looked at a photo of it. Since it's under insulation I thought it was all metal. Yes I bet the hose is cracked and I plan on disconnecting the p/s belt and pulling the hose to inspect this weekend.

I wish Monterey and SLO were closer... I'd love to come over and help out. Good luck!

I agree...just far enough apart to require a little more effort and planning. Maybe if there's a major project we can meet up sometime.

Mine was leaking allot I went to NAPA and got some rubber heater tubing and just ran it from the tank to the rack bypassing the pump and no more leak. Also on the plus side my arms are getting stronger from it.
