Since I'v purchased my car a few months ago I hear very noticeably sounds coming from underneath the shifter as I'm in gear descelerating. Sounds like a winding sound like a slight metal scraping on metal sound. Sounds like the driveshaft is touching something as it spins, I think this may also be the cause of the car jerking a bit when its in a lower gear descelerating between 1.5-2k rpm. It wasn't bad before, bearely noticeable but now its becoming much louder. And i drove the car yesterday and its starting to make a continuous knocking sound out of gear when descelerating, not very loud but noticeable, and i never heard this sound before. I'm a bit worried because my previous 89 944 had 170k miles on it, and never made these type of sounds. I'm pretty sure the clutch isn't related, the car shifts smooth besides a slight clank sound when changing gears, but that sound is very minimal and seems normal, i measured the wear on the clutch through the hole in the cover and it seems find. I'm pretty sure this is a driveshaft problem? anyone else dissagree or have any suggestions on how to remedy these annoying sounds?

My '84 jerks/lurches when lifting off the gas in the 1-2K RPM range in 1st and 2nd gear since I've had it. I just start feathering the clutch when that happens. But you might check the TPS to make sure it's adjusted right.
Right before my rubber-centered clutch went out, the car started making a lot more gear noise and whine. I thought it was the driveshaft-related, but when I got the 'clunk' and huge lurch when lifting off the throttle quickly, I knew it was the clutch. The clutch still shifted fine, and the wear was within limits.

sounds like your rubber centered clutch is junk and its banging around when you take off-let off the gas- need a clutch before the rubber takes out the ref sensors.

One thing you can try, just to eliminate the clutch, is get under the car and look for a rectangular rubber access plug just in front of the transmission. Pull the plug out, reach up with your hand and grab the driveshaft with the engine in neutral, and give it a hard twist. If it turns then your rubber-centered clutch is shot. When mine went, I could turn it 30 degrees.
