Default Ball Joint Repair kit

Has anyone used a ball joint repair kit on their late 944 or 951? My car is in the shop getting a bunch of stuff done and the mechanic has never rebuilt the ball joints on an 86 951. I faxed him directions, but I'm wondering if there these kits work well or if it would be better to get new control arms.

Have the Rennbay track kit on my car. Over 15k miles of hard use (15+ autocrosses) and they holding up great. The only other reason i wouldnt buy them again is if i decided to drop the $1500 on Charlie Arms or the Racer's Edge Arms.

I agree, and the kits are easy as pie, just a little messy. Well worth the few bucks.

Just spoke to my mechanic and he said it was easy, he had just never done it before. My car has been in the shop for 10 days and I can't wait to get it back. Pretty much had anything that was wrong with it fixed.

Good Day,

I just bought a 1986 NA, and had to replace one of the ball joints as part of the safety inspection. The shop guys were telling me that they used to use a kit that had plastic cups, and they are wearing out really fast. The kit they use today has brass cups, which they said should last much longer. You might want to check which set your shop used.

It depends. I used "another manufacturer's" kit with the brass bushings and it died within less than a year, which was less than a season of autocross and maybe at best 3000 road miles.

Could the ball joint sockets have been out of round before the rebuild? The brass bushings are pretty much indestructible when the sockets are still in good shape.

Are you using the street kit, or the race kit ?

Just a side note.. our Track kits have aluminum bronze internal bushings. Brass is a poor bushing material because it work hardens and tends to crack.

I bought the kit from 944online.com. Sorry Travis. I didn't hit your site until after I already had my order.

Nope, they were good.

Like Travis said, the brass bushings work-hardened and failed. They cracked into little tiny bits. They didn't deform or get out of round.

Where do you think 944Online.com gets their kits?
