Slapping noise when letting clutch out?

When you engage the clutch in shifting there is a noticeable metal slapping noise which I believe could be a U joint? The drive shaft is covered so it is difficult to see the connection. Is this a possible answer? Recently changed the rack and pinion per Clarks garage info and it went smooth as silk although doing it by yourself became a 10 hour marathon. However, it did not mention that the steering wheel will be off center when completed until you have the front end aligned. I thought I had not done it correctly because of the position of the steering wheel. Had it aligned and it's now straight.

Check for loose bolts holding the rear drive axles to the transmission and rear wheel hubs. I had that noise and all the bolts had backed out, 3 had broken off. Check it asap.

You had a rubber centered clutch last that long?!? I'd recommend checking the clutch sometime soon. When the rubber center goes out, it'll just crumble and have horrible affects sometimes... mine took out the tranny when it went (excessive slop in the drivetrain).
