Default Busted tranny

Hey there! For those who have read some of my previous posts, I finally took the old transmission out of my 944. Opened it up and this is what i found! No wonder it would lock up when you tried to move it! DRAG RACING IS BAD!!!! This was done by the PO ( My brother) Enjoy the pics!

Wow that is brutal. Just goes to show that:
A. As metal gets older it gets brittle
B. These cars aren't meant to be launched hard on a regular basis.

Its not because the metal was brittle. Its because the tolerance between the ring and pinion gears became greater due to wear and was never addressed.

How many miles were on that trans? More than 60K, correct? Model year was somewhere between 85.5 and 87?

Unfortunately the mileage was unknown cause the the odometer started to act like there was a ghost in it. Some days it would just stop, other days it would just kinda spin. I'm thinking it had over 80k. It's from the 88 model year. I'll probably rebuild the tranny after I finish rebuilding the one I have in the car now.

Agreed, over time the tolerance grows due to wear and tear and the gears don't get lubricated properly. Unfortunately its several hundred bucks to fix the situation so most folks just find a used tranny after their's splodes.

I got lucky and the rest of the gears are in good condition. I'm thinking a rebuild would be a good idea for the future just so I have a spare in case something happens to the one that is currently in the car (Which I am planning on rebuilding this winter) So many rebuilds so little time!

How would you know they were worn (symptoms?), and how would you address it?

Seems like the stuff you would replace to address it would be pretty much what you would have to do to rebuilt it - though the extra metal floating around could damage other parts.

Thanks!

They start to howl and make more noise even than normal. Anything over 60K should be considered suspect.

The way to fix it is to crack the trans open and re-shim the r&P so that the ring and pinion gears fit together tighter again (that's an oversimplified explanation but gets the point acrossed). So you aren't really replacing the R&P like you would need to now on that trans.

Hope that makes sense~

Perfect sense, thanks, Tifo!

Mine is quiet at 121,000 miles so it's either been shimmed, or replaced, or I'm darn lucky... so far

My car has about 82K on it and its on its 5th trans. When I was autocrossing it regularly I was blowing a trans up about every 9-12 months.

Yep. The "something" is autocrossing....

Haven't autocrossed for 2 seasons now and still have the same trans in the car. Autocrossing on a used N/A trans is too dynamic and will kill it. I never did any smoky hard launches but it still was just too much.
