Default Timing belt retension - anyone able to help, CT shoreline near Essex CT

Hi,

I have an 87 944 S that has had the belts changed about 600 miles ago. I know that it's recommended that I have it retensioned after 1000 miles. Is there anyone in the area that can help me with this and has the correct tool? I am looking to start to do some of my own maintenance on the car but am not very handy. I'm pretty sure I could change the oil but thats all that I would want to attempt without supervision. However I did change the air filter and the stock computer chip (to russell berrys 944S max chip - what a nice guy!) It'll probably be another month or so before I rack up the miles as its not a daily driver but I wanted to put it out there. I'd really like to meet some fellow 944 ethusiasts in the area and would buy beers etc in return for the labour.

Thanks all

Default Shop times

How long should a timing belt and alternator/Power Steering/AC tensioning take? 2 hours?

Thanks

I think my shop charged $120 the last time they did it, which is about 1.5 hours.

I have the tensioner tool but am not familiar with the DOHC engines or the auto-tensioners. If you can dig up some specific info on doing the 944S and are willing to drive to Waterford, I'll try and help you out.

I just bought the tool, but never use it, I have to learn how to adjust the belts also. If you have a belt party let me know. I would help. and learn.

It would be a good idea to study the section in Clarks Garage in belt tensioning:

http://clarks-garage.com/ then click 'Garage Shop Manual' then look under 'C' for Camshaft (Timing) Belt and Balance Belt Tension

Default Big thanks to Mike C.

Went over to his house today, we chatted, he tightened by belts. What a nice guy!

That's a real nice original 944S you have there. Those spring tensioners do make the job easier for sure...
