Default Damn shift cable!

So I redid my shifter insulation fix, not having done it properly the last time (left some gaps).

Went through the standard procedure: disconnect shifter cable(s) from transmission housing, remove cables from transmission mounts, take apart centre console and unbolt shifter.

Did the insulation thang, shoved the shifter back into its hole (made much tighter now thanks to the new insulation), then went to reconnect the cables.

Well lo and behold the shifter cable is just a hair too short! I'm talking a millimeter, maybe two. No matter what I do, I just can't make it find that extra little space! Needless to say that tiny tiny length is enough to throw the gears off (it's an automatic).

Anyone have advice on this? I've tried redoing the whole procedure not once but twice, but I always end up with the same problem. Talk about frustrating!

Thanks, I figured it out. Turned out the mounting location for the shifter cable on the shifter assembly was ever so slightly bent the wrong way. Bent it back and hey presto, works again!

Yeah I went through that once...
I just snapped the cable on both ends and used a crow bar to pull crap into place.
I have a used one in damn good shape sittin in my dads shop so I wasn't too worried. LOL
