Do you think it will ever happen? Would Porsche ever build a 944 follow-on?

I was thinking today that I would absolutely go into debt for a brand new Porsche, 4-cylinder front engine turbo. I am generally against buying anything new, however, if Porsche made a 944 follow-on and actually gave it a number designation instead of the contemporary naming bull crap they do now (Cayman??), I would buy one. And in 20 years I'd be on Rennlist telling about my 200,000 mile Porsche I picked up brand new at the dock.

From: one thousand, five hundred miles north of Ft. Lauderdale for the summer.
in the early days of the 944, the cars came at a bargain cost, and delivered basically unequalled performance (before the Japanese caught up).... the low-priced entry level 944 was replaced by the 924S in 1986 and the 944 kept going up and up and up, and by the time the S2's and 968s arrived they had virtually priced themselves out of the entry-level sportscar market... way back when, Porsche was one of a select few automakers that produced four-cylinder cars of distinction. but today, such a possibility no longer exists so why build one. they avoid this dilemma with the Boxster and Cayman because they offer exceptional styling, options and performance in a mid-engine, layout at just about the same price points as the old 944/944T pairings. and there would be little gain in producing a car that would only take sales numbers away from the Boxster... therefore, any new, front engine sports cars they develop now will be done as a flagship model as the long-overdue replacement to the 928 GTS.... to offset the heavy, safety devices, will require a lot of expensive, lightweight parts to help the car surpass the performance of the competition (Lotus/Nissan/Lexus/etc) and reach 200 mph or more.... the powertrain would likely be based on the Panamera with the base-price of the cars topping $130~140 k.

I think the Panamera (is racing in NASCAR WTF?) as a big 2-dr. GT V8 coupe would fit the bill, but perhaps a little brother to it as well akin to our cars. I could get onboard with that, but I wouldn't purchase it new. I'll wait patiently for you suckers to and then step in to save your finances a few years later.
