Hello porscheholics.I own a 1990 944 S2 convertible and i am in the middle of changing my clutch kit.As far as i've seen the best deal is the SACHS super clutch kit from PELICAN PARTS with spring center and on the other hand is the original 3 piece kit from PORSCHE with a rubber center.A lot of you have written in the past that the sachs sping centered creates vibration, shudder on downshifting if the revs don't match etc.I want to do the job just once and as best as possible, and this is why i want the super clutch kit so please suggest!

I don't know if you can still get a rubber centered clutch disk for reasonable money, but I had one in my S2 cab. The original lasted 130K miles. I bought the car at 135K with the new clutch. I must say the rubber center works quite well in reducing NVH. When I got the 1990 I also had an 89 S2 with a fresh Sachs spring clutch and you could really tell the difference in noise and smoothness. Sure the rubber center might not last as long as the friction surface, but you might like the quieter clutch and might not care if it only lasts 10-12 years.
I would prefer OEM-style rubber center for a non-track application if I had to do it again.

first of all the site is already added in my favorites! As far as i understand the problem of the vibration is the flywheel and not the spring centered disk. The second one creates the extra noise.does anyone knows if the pelican super clutch kit contains the Sachs standard spring center disc or the Sport version?Furthermore would it be a good idea to combine an original rubber disk with the rest of the pelican super clutch kit and not use the spring centered one?I am sorry i am so fussy but i live in Athens-greece i already paid once my x stupid mechanic for this job' **** result and the spare parts here are very expensive.3 piece kit from porsche with discount 1000 euro!

I think a rubber center disc and Sachs pressure plate would be fine. You could see if Pelican or Paragon or someone will sell you the kit minus the disc for a good price.

I disagree. It really depends on your driving style. I replaced the stock rubber-centered clutch disc in my 83 944 with another rubber-centered unit and it only lasted 35K miles.
Replaced it again with a spring-centered unit and it lasted at least twice as long.
Replaced the S2 clutch with a spring centered unit at least 20K miles ago back in 2003 and it's still running great with practically no vibration.
My advice is to think about how you drive -if you drive aggressively, you should definitely fit a spring-centered unit. If not, then you might consider a rubber-centered, but I wouldn't recommend it.
You can buy a spring-centered SACHS kit online from US-based suppliers for around US$400-600, but make sure to have it sent via U.S. Postal Service, or be prepared to pay heavy EU duties upon delivery.

I suppose it's possible to tear up the rubber center with hard launches or something, but I never had a problem with normal spirited driving. You had one last only 35K miles? Most people seem to have no problems getting 100K out of a clutch. The noisy 944 trans is a lot more evident with the spring clutch, I thought the rubber center was nice for a non-track car. I do not know if I'd pay much of a premium for that. $100 sure, $300 probably not.
For drift though, yeah you'll want the spring center.

OK I checked my records and it was 45K miles. The spring-centered I replaced it with lasted 70K, though.
What I prefer about spring-centered is that when they begin to fail they start slipping. When the rubber-centered discs fail, they start bucking and the gears don't shift normally. At least that was my experience.
