Default XP: "clack clack clack" coming from left rear wheel

I realized I should've put this thread initially in this forum and not the 951-specific one, so the result is that both forums get to bask in the glory of my conundrum!

This problem is only intermittent, and when it does happen, will only make the sharp "knocking" or tapping when accelerating. At cruising or decel (regardless of speed), no sound can be heard.

Bad halfshaft? I can't imagine it's the bearing; I've never heard a bearing "tap" before. Could the halfshaft be misaligned?

What should I check, and then after checking, what should I replace?

Thanks!

Join the club, I just had my CV go out this last weekend on a run. I made it back OK though and it was getting worse by the mile.

You were getting the same sound coming from the rear wheel then?

So then what's the best plan of action? Replace the whole shaft???

I'd suggest replacing the CVs on both sides of the shaft even thought just one has failed. Do both while you're at it.

IMMEDIATELY check the CV joint bolts on that side of the car. All of mine backed out to finger tight and two broke off at my outer CV joint. The idiot PO replaced the axle on that side and didnt torque down the outer CV joint bolts. It took 6 months of driving for the bolts to back out but when they did the force of it banging around broke two bolts and bent the other ones. The car only made noticeable noise for 2 days before I checked it. It took quite a while to fish out one of the broken off bolts and if I hadnt been able to I would have had to take the rear bearing assembly apart to do it.

just blew my cv apart last night. I'm going to be putting another entire new axel into the car but also making a brace like the one pictured in my thread that 95one made to counter the torsion load of the trans on the axel. could be a reason for premature axel wear.

dammit, now you have me thinking i have the same problem.

i've got a clack/knock specifically at 2200 rpms no matter what gear i'm in, only on acceleration, not on decel or if i'm just cruising at that RPM

damn.

Definately sounds like a CV joint. I'm betting it's the driver's inner CV. They tend to go much faster than the others, due to the placement of the hot exhaust pipe just below that CV.

(And that's why I take a spare half-shaft with me to the track...)

Probably.

The clicking is sometimes the result of the inner cage inside the CV disintegrating. The type of clicking (when, what speeds, cornering...etc) you hear depends on what has broken or twisted off this cage.

The axle that was replaced on my car was the side that has the exhaust as well.
