Someone needs to start selling engine-less 944's and then v8's seperately so we can register them as kit cars like they do with the nobles.

I always thought a Buick Grand National engine, turbocharged to all hell, would make a cool swap.......

I was just thinking that the other day. It would not be any more difficult than a V8 swap.

Actually it is possible the get an LS1 to pass smog in a 944 in CA. I have a buddy who just put a 6.0 from a newer chevy truck into his "89 jeep and was able to get it to pass. It was a complicated process though.

You need to meed with a guy who works for the state(I cant remeber his title), and as long as you still have all the emissions equipment from the never engine, he will basicly give you a new vin number, titling your car as a camaro or gto or vette or whatever.

As long as the engine is the same year or newer than the chassis and you retain all the emissions equip. it is perfectly legal. And if you want to add a CARB approved supercharger or turbo, that's legal also.

turbobob's V-6 Grand National car was at last years 944 fest, as was my tan one (LS1) and a red one that Becker (LT1) owns down in Cincinatti. His is a drag car mostly and mine was built for the One Lap of America. Beckers is a street only version. Oh yeah and there was a Chevy powered 928 there too. We should try Guiness and apply for the world's largest collection of Frankencars in one place, lol.

I dont think Charlie's car is on the site. The car in your video is pretty badass. I just came up with a solution to one of the bigger problems with the hybrids; brakes. We lose the brake booster with the engine swap and the OEM master cylinder makes pedal pressure uncomfortably high for track use. I worked with Wilwood engineering and they stock a 1 inch piston 50/50 mc that can be adapted to our cars without any interference. Braking is a bit more difficult than the stock setup but with race pads I can lock all four up without having to have superman legs.

Don't you love the sound of 8 cylinders sucking huge air like that ! The guys on the hybrids site have done some fantastic stuff and that is a great resource. I am underway with my LS1 project into the 968 and there are a couple of areas that need special attention. First the stock oil pan is a problem so I'm fabbing a shallow pan with a 3 litre precharge tank, sort of a semi dry sump. The clutch only needs to have a disc built on a porsche spline so thats pretty simple once you find the right clutch guy. Motor mounts and header really need ingenuity. The torque tube needs to mate to the bellhousing and that needs presicion machining. Brake boosting is pretty important all things considered and an electric boost used on hotrods is in my budget. It goes for about a grand but like I said its important stuff. One thing i learned is that it ain't a cheap project. Then again I've spent almost 10gs on my 944 in five years and that was to just keep it running.
