How do you clean 944 block? I tried two diferent engine degreasers and it is better than before, but still no where near as clean as I want it to be.
Now I bought habro foaming degreaser and I'll try with that tomorow, but I don't think it'll do any better..

Also, how to clean head mating surface without making it uneven? Looks like I'll have to get the block to the shop after all...

Take your block parts to a machine shop. Most of them will let you put your parts in their hot tank for not much (~$40)

They will shine like new. Just make sure the solvent they use is safe for aluminum, or you will pull the basket out with nothing but water pump and head studs! (non-aluminum solvent is rare...but its out there)

Hmm.. I don't think alusil and hot tank like each other... Even names seems incompatible

Too bad that I can't find shop that would use ultrasonic tub.

Alusil just means the aluminum is mixed with silicon when its cast..... There is nothing "special" about it. They cylinders aren't coated with anything.

Tank it bro....

I'll try and find a good shop here..

I wish we had a shop like that mesa something guy that posts procedure videos on youtube. He seems to really know his job. Here in our shops, I can never trust anybody. They always seem to find a way to fu** something up. One shop here for instance lost broken axle that they should reproduce/fix from my 1977 harley 250sx. And I still haven't found replacement.

I finally got Hazet gear-less piston ring compressor and install pliers from germany.

It took them more than one month to deliver...

Love the shot of the roadside! I was just in Slovenia in May, while heading to Croatia on business. Ljubljana may be my new favorite city in Europe, and the Julian Alps were stunning. Would've loved to have a 951 to take over the Vrsic Pass, instead of the dinky Fiat Panda I was stuck in... the rental agency bait and switched me from a BMW 1-series I was supposed to have.

Yea, those studs look terrible. I'm doing this same project and I ended replacing all the studs.

Are people in Slovenia that trustworthy that you can hang a block out there and expect it to be there when you come back?

Looks like head gasket was leaking water in these two studs, causing them to corode together with aluminum.

I hate threads of all kinds with passion. Seems like every block has to be fu**ed somehow, if cylinder walls are not scored than atleast one bolt must be like that, or something else must be f-ed. I had same sh*t on bmw engine, and I swap the block. But late 944 block in good condition is rare and expensive here

Those roads are the exact reason why I am building this car

That and ocasional visit to to autobahn

Btw: on your way to Croatia from Ljubljana, if you took motorway, you passed Visnja Gora (16km from Lj). If you happen to go trough here again, shoot me an email, and I'll invite you to beer or two. (or something nonalcoholic since you drive)

I don't know how to solve this sh**.

I mailed Raceware if they can provide oversize threads on block size and they replied:

We do not make over-sized studs for the Porsche 944 Turbo engine. The best suggestion we can make is that you contact Wurth Ag in Germany and see if they can provide a ~ 38mm long Timesert to install in the block so that you can use the std. RACEWARE Head Stud Kit.
I don't exactly like the idea with timesert, since than I have two threads and only one can be corectly sealed with loctite. (timesert to block sealing can't be performed correctly since headbolts should be tightened directly after applying loctite, but since timesert insertion will be performed by shop, that is not possible.)

I contacted ARP with same question, I hope they can provide larger block side thread.

On general yes. There may be some exceptions from time to time (bicycles get stolen sometimes), but I leave my car(s) unlocked for most of the time.
