Default what happened? Ref sensor troubles.

so i just completed - finally- a clutch job on a friend of mines car. When i pulled the bellhousing-pulled the trans not the motor- i was careful to remove the ref sensors and put them back as they were. Tonite i started the car up and it had a whiiiiirrrrrring noise, then the tach stopped and the car died. I pulled the ref sensors- the front one was perfect- the rear one is all grinded up! Now i did not remove the braket so im not sure how this couldve happend. Any ideas? I wasnt being rough w/ the braket or anything unless it was just loose but it didnt seem so. Didnt see any spacers in there when i removed the sensor either.

anyone have a ref sensor they can ship right away???

What year was the car? The later model ones use a washer on the back ref sensor, right? Did that not make it back in? Also, did the shop that resurfaced the flywheel get the allen screw set to the right depth (assuming you had it resurfaced)?

Regards,

I also suspect that the spacer is missing.

You might want to go with a new one as a mixture of aged and heat wears them down pretty quick. Remember to do the speed sensor too (same part number). I remember I unplugged one once and the connector just crumbled right away.

I think were ALL missing the point here. He didnt gap the sensors, I also dont think he gapped them incorrectly.

One sensor was fine, the other one got torn up, I think hes trying to figure out why one sensor was torn to all hell, and the other one was perfect.

I had an 86 and did the sensors on it. There are no spacers.

Maybe you could try adjusting the bracket back just a little bit more, then use sharkys tool to regap it?

well i figured out why the sensor got all torn up. Went out to TJ's house and picked up a ref sensor from a motor thats sitting in his garage. I noticed that one had a spacer on it so i though " hey i'll use this one". Got home and started putting the new sensor in when i noticed this laying on the back of the engine!

I don't recall that one... but perhaps:
