5w-50 is not too thin for start up. Honestly, with the cold weather coming up, you can run a 40 weight oil. I ran Castrol Syntec Blend 10w-40 for the winter in my Turbo, daily driven, and oil pressure was never a problem, and that car makes more heat then the N/A's. I ran a synthetic blend because I had the usual front end leaks and I did not want to keep using up $6 a quart full synthetic. I will run a full synthetic this winter as I have taken care of the oil leaks since last winter, and Mobil 1 is now only $4 a quart when you buy the 5 quart jugs.

even in january it rarely gets below -1 to -5 here. october, november, december even it is usually above 5 degrees. So it doesn't get too cold here.

I want to help with oil pressure when hot so I think 5w50 would be better than 10w40.

hopefully I won't have any leaks as I don't have leaks now. But like I mentioned my rear balance shaft seals likely leaked and I aplied some rtv sealant around them and they don't leak anymore.

I was running Castrol 5w50 synth in my 924S. The car is mostly a track car so it sees very high temps. The oil pressure when hot was fine. I recently switched to castrol 20w50 dino oil and see the same oil pressure when the car is hot. Ill just be changing the dino more often.

I agree that the 5W-50 would be a better choice than 10W-40, viscosity is better for both temperature extremes. BTW, I don't think your oil pressure number are bad.

Canadian tire had a sale today on their own brand full synthetic (formula 1 full synthetic) 21.99 for a jug so I got the 5w50 synthetic cost me 35 bucks for 6.4 litres not bad.

hopefully it won't just leak out everywhere lol. I'll see how it runs with the 5w50 synthetic. not sure what company makes the canadiantire brand oils.

didn't feel like paying double the price for castrol synthec or mobil one.

problem is now I used a paper type gasket for the oil drain plug last time and I'm going to try and reuse it as they I can't find another copper or paper oil drain gasket anwhere and don't want to wait to order one.

Some of us took a very hard run today that will test any oil; we talked about this same thing. We were in the mountains up to 7,000', sometimes stuck behind slow motor homes, and the temps were in the 90's. I've been using the Valvoline VR-1 20W 50 for over 2 years now. My oil pressure never dropped below 3.0 bar at idle with the AC on in traffic, anything over 3K rpm I was running 4-5 bar. When I ran the older Mobil 1 20W-50 it was the same. The new formula 15W-50 Mobil 1 does not work for me at all. I have 145K on my motor and I think the VR-1 is the best oil I've used so far in 4 years.

Steve, I run 10w30 or 10w40 in my car (it came with it). Would I be better off with a 20w50? My car is kept in the garage and seldom driven in the rain. 120k miles. Temp gauge rarely reaches the first line.

FWIW, I've been able to reuse the aluminum oil plug washer several times with no problems by lightly sanding both sides smooth again with 400 grit emery on a glass plate (i.e. a very flat surface).

LOL - I reuse mine all the time because I can never seem to find the stash of 20 I bought years ago.

10W-30 is like water to a 951 in hotter weather. The rain doesn't matter in oil, the ambient temps, engine loading, and oil temps do matter. I have yet to find a 40W oil that makes me more confident like the VR-1 Racing. It's old school dino oil loaded with the correct ZDDP concentrations and doesn't thin out when hot in my experience. Selecting the perfect oil is like looking for the Holy Grail, everyone has an idea where it is but never found it. I completely ignore the "Porsche Approved" oil because ever since they said that 0W-40 Mobil 1 is fine for the 951...yeah and I have some magic beans to sell you.

I was just picking up some Valvoline Syn tonight at the local Kragen (I was down 1/2 quart) and saw two kinds of Valvoline Racing oil. One just said 50 and the other 60. Which one is the VR-1 (if either)? Thanks.

The oil I'm talking about is just called Valvoline Racing VR-1. I wait for a coupon or sale and buy it at AutoZone for about $2.75/ qt. VR-1 is not a synthetic oil so that's your call if you are sold on synthetics. There are a few peop0le that don't like it and some that do so I'm just basing it on my experience today and what the "Porsche Approved' oil did in a freshly rebuilt mid- 80's 911 in the same conditions.
