Default Brake squeak...or fingernails across a blackboard

So there's the old saying if it's a Porsche then the brakes squeak. Of course my '87 951 brakes are living up to this saying, especially braking from slow speeds. For me this is like fingernails across a blackboard!! I'm not sure how old the pads and rotors are but in general the brakes appear and perform quite well.

But this leads me to the inevitable question, has anyone found a solution to squeaky brakes?

Maybe this will help.

This sound is usually caused by vibration of the pad against the rotor. At high speed or track speed braking, the pad heats up enough to get rid of the squeaking. The pads are usually made for performance for these cars and so are made out of a compound that is very hard under normal driving conditions or they do not soften at normal breaking temps.

Things to try are:

Anti-squeal paste and backing pads. These kinda work but didnt for me (993TT reds).

Anti squeal "pucks." These snap inside the piston of the caliper and have an adhesive backing towards the pad. These still didnt work for me and theyre expensive little guys.

Pads. You can normally buy pads on a performace "hierarchy." Theres metal pads, green pads, glass pads, maxi pads, etc. The pad you choose should correspond to the driving you do such as street or track.

Many pads have an angled cut towards the sides of them. This is to help to squeal or vibration from happening. The same thing happens when you hold a piece of chalk perpendicular to a chalk board and slide it across the board...you hear that nasty squeal. Holding the chalk to an angle stops it. Same thing here.

If you decide to "modify" your existing pads by griding these angles, wear a mask...you must. The particles are highly dangerous.

Other things include drilled/ slotted rotors (so ive heard) that cut the pad each breaking stop. Im alittle weary about this becasue my rotors are drilled and it still squeals like a stuck piggy. Oh well. Anyway, yes, it would seem all porsches squeal. Kinda downgrades the whole experience but I learned to live with it.....except when I break around the womens....

Good Luck.

it could be that your brakes are worn down enough that they are on the squeakers - stock type pads are designed to make noise to let you know they need replacment.

mine does the same thing... rather new pads and rotors... only does it occasionally under very light braking.

I'm working on trying to figure out what it is... if/when I figure it out, I'll let you know

I do believe the pads aren't too old and I suspect the rotors as well, although I don't have any documentation when the PO did a brake job.

They do only squeal at low speed so maybe it's just typical behavior. Still though at times it's like fingernails across a blackboard!

Now if this is all I can complain about I think I should be thankful!

my stock pads were still almost full depth and would squeal real bad. Went to Metalmaster Ultimate ceramic pads and they rarely ever squeal, and stop like crazy.

the low speed only squeal is consistent with what I said about being on the squeakers

unfortunately, in my case, the brakes are only about 6k miles old, and a visual inspection shows LOTS of material left

I had plenty of material left too, but I stepped down from a track type pad to an everyday pad and that eliminated the squeaking. Mine's a daily driver so I didn't need that hard of a compound and I got sick of everyone looking up in alarm when I squeaked to a stop. I don't believe I ever got those track pads warm enough to perform at their best anyway.

Exactly! I really wish they had a soft 993 pad.

3M makes a disc thats made for suffing the rotors once they "glaze" alittle. I tried this and it seems to work for roughly a couple months. I quick way (loud way too) to stop the squeal is @ ~20mph pressing hard on the breaks takes some of the squeal away for subsequent braking.

Don't newish pads squeak until they're broken in?
