You have an internal "bath" oil cooler - the oil filter adaptor plate is where the internal oil cooler is located. It uses the coolant to bath the oil instead of using air.

The Turbo's, S2's and 968's came with a normal external air type oil cooler.

Do these type of oil coolers have the possibility for the coolant to mix in the oil?

Very much yes! Are you getting oil mixed with coolant?

"My milkshake brings all the mechanics to the garage..."

Your oil cooler gasket is likely leaking as the oil pressure is higher than coolant so when they start leaking the oil leaks into the coolant making the "milkshake" mixture. New oil cooler gaskets for the internal bath oil coolers (n/a 944s) are ~$25k each and take about 2-3 hours for a DIY to do. Check Clarks garage for the DIY writeup as I've done per their instructions and it is a good writeup.

If you bought your car with meticulious maintenance records then you can look. If not then you're in the dark like 90% of 944 owners here.

Think of it this way. The car is a 1983 model and it's 2007 - that car is 24 years old and problems will arise. Gaskets leak over time and it may have been replaced sometime in the 90's. The oil cooler is not a big deal to replace or get fixed. It's pretty simple to do it alone. Just get an Oil Pressure Relief adjuster (you can also use a certain size socket) to align the cooler when you put it back on to make sure the OPR valve will go in correctly and not bind.

hmm, i will have to look into getting the oil cooler seal kit for it then. How long do you think it would take a 944 mechanic to do it?

An experienced mechanic should be able to do it in ~ 1 hour. They have all the tools and tricks to get to it quickly (plus a lift compared to crawling on the garage floor). If you bring it to the dealer they'd likely charge a minimum of $300+ just for the effort.
