For a while now my car has been getting hot in after driving for 20+ minutes at a time.
The heat is coming from under the center console. I can feel it under the ash tray and under my head unit.
I don't mind just dealing with it but it makes my HU really darn hot and I'm afraid to kill it.

Anyway... to the point. I know the stock heat shield is at least mostly there, I don't know how long it should be but it is not enough. Maybe it's just failing due to rust and wear over the years somehow... IDK.

Any ideas on how I could block the heat from coming into the cabin? I was thinking of getting some of the heat shield mats that people use under hoods. Anyone think that would actually work?
It would be easier and lighter than trying to form a sheet of metal to fit.

My console gets very hot some days as well... The change inside the armrest will burn your hand sometimes.

 

Yup thats exactly it. Im 99% sure its the exhaust heat coming up. My ashtray can burn my fingers as can the metal on my head unit.
The women don't like the heat much either... and the sad part is, since my brand new thermostat is stuck open it never warms the hell up in the winter.

I really need to find a way to block this heat though.

 

happens with mine too. Is this a usual thing on 944s or do I have the foreman grill center console option?

Let me ask a silly question then.
Does the drive shaft produce a lot of heat as well? Or is it all the exhaust?

 

I think its because the cat is right under the armrest. The cat creates ALOT of heat and if you have any holes in your sealing foam under the console, that heat will find its way inside.

 

how hard is that sealing foam to replace?

reason I ask... If it's difficult to replace I'll probably try something new instead of fixing something that will wear away again.

 

Im not exactly sure. Mine leaks too. My shifter gets almost too hot to touch...Like you said, im not going to spend the time to fix something that will just break again.

 

There is the sealing foam between the torque tube and the underside of the floorboard, that should be making a seal keeping the hot air from getting to the shifter area. Then there is a rubber shift boot under the leather or vinyl one. My rubber boot was torn almost in half and the shifter area got really hot. I got a new one from paragon or other online place, it wasnt cheap but after putting it on it made a world of difference. I have found that they split with age and also mice chew through them to get into the interior of the car.

This usually indicates that the cat is getting clogged up. Cat delete or transplant is the cure, and will likely have a noticeable performance improvement as well.

 

same thing happens too me, seal foam may work, but that would only be temporary.

still wondering if the cat is really the problem, not doubting it but thinking of other ideas.

 

i dunno if my cat is clogged or not.. the car runs fine, aside from some minor acceleration hiccups...it passed emissions here in az with flying colors not a year ago

 

I know that you can buy a new piece of foam from www.944online.com. It's about $80 or so. I'm replacing mine because I have this same issue. I'm also installing a cat delete pipe soon as well.
