This is what's left of my odometer gear...
The odometer quit working a while back- last weekend I had the time to dig into it and see what's the deal.
The plastic is gooey. When I took the speedo out, there were only 4 teeth missing. By the time I had the gears removed, the center hub was all I had left. I had to scan/enlarge to count the teeth- 22 strangely. New one ordered.
For scale- that is about 3/8" diameter.

do yourself a favor- the pin that goes through the odometer numbers slides off to one side- push it back in until the copper ring is against the body of the speedo, and put a drop of glue on it. It seems to slide off to the side and lock the cluster up- seen this on three cars now.
oh- and take some compressed air and gently blow out any debris left in the cluster as well- pieces of gear locked mine up after i put the new gear in.

I'll make sure there's nothing left. I cannot believe how soft that plastic got. Mushy.
Anyone wanting to make this repair- it's a snap. The hardest part is counting the teeth to get the right gear.

Its a snap to do -- unless when pulling the speedometer needle off the plastic round part breaks in half causing the whole needle shaft to bend to one side. Then when straightening it, it breaks off. Thats what happened to me on my second one when I thought I was good at it. Apparently the needle was jammed on really tight at the factory and the whole thing came apart in my fingers. I actually soldered that tiny pin back together and used the speedometer until I could get a new one.

The needle was the only hangup. I used a fork with 4 tines (tongs?) that put equal pressure on the sides. I did sweat it and after some unnatural-feeling force it popped off.

Should I lube the odometer barrels with anything? Mine had gone from 0xxxxx to 5xxxxxx. I've reset it to the guesstimate and would like to go from there without another hang up.

I think it it- if you press the washer to the housing it's hard to turn the tumblers. I slid it out, away from the housing and was able to change the numbers to something this side of a million.

I fixed my gear and had it hang up again. So I looked here on the site and someone had a trick where they put a small spacer on the hundred thousand side of the tumbler. This keeps the tumbler from having the space to slide away from the gears that drive it, jamming up the gears. I personally stripped the plastic off a bread twist tie and used the thin wire between the tumbler and the odometer housing to take up the space. It doesnt get hung up because that side never moves until you turn the next 100,000 miles. I have put 2000 miles on the odometer since and it has not gotten hung up again.
