Cool DME replacement - VROOOM!

So, after all this time, I finally replaced the DME computer today. Kijo started right up, and purred like a kitten - and has every time today, and I drove her around a bit. Will put gas in her tomorrow, and drive her a few miles tomorrow.

I decided I'd try and repair the DME, so I took it apart, and looked at the circuit board. Guess what I saw? Half of it was burned and with plastic melted onto it! I undid the interior screws, to pry it from the other circuit board, and the whole thing is melted together! Instead of being nice, silver soldered joints, half of it, on a diagonal, is burnt dingy gold. Oh, and has that awful, burning smell I'd been complaining about!

Now, I only hope there isn't any other parts messed up. Just imagine - two Porsche places couldn't fix it, or listened to what I had to say - took a gal to do a shop's job, lol!

did you ever do any welding on the car without unplugging the DME?

Wow, and I was thinking of doing some welding on the 944. I didn't know I had to unplug the computer until now.

Good job finding the prob! Post pics of the 944 brain damage!

The DME plug on my old 83 melted a little bid but I never opened the DME up to take a look. I once welded a hook shock back on and I didn't even think about that but they appear to still be fine inside.

Kijo is the name of my 944 Means "demoness" in Japanese. Named her after one of my comic book characters who wears a school girl uniform, who is a vampire. Ergo, my avatar of my car with teeth, lol.

Before you do any electrical work on the car, you should unplug the battery, which should prevent damage to the DME, as far as I know.

You bet I'll post pics, unbelievable! First thing I'd said to Cam when I opened it in the dim light, "There's no way they'd use gold solder on a car computer board, is there!?" He was like, "That thing stinks, toss it!" That's when I realized it was toasty.

I'm just amazed at what everything the shops insisted on checking, instead of simply swapping that to test, when I said I thought that was it. Oh, well. I may take it to the last shop, just to look at their faces.
