Default Where is that oxygen sensor / lambda sensor

Hi there,

It seems like my 944 turbo (951) '86 needs a new oxygen sensor (failing emissions).

I've looked at the manuals for the 944 (non-turbo) and the lambda seems to be easily accessible underneath the car at the point where the 2 exhaust pipes join up (after the 4 from the engine have become 2...).

I've tried to find it on my turbo but no luck at all! So two questions:

1) Do all turbos have an oxygen sensor? Mine was first sold in Germany and is the 85-86 model.

2) Where in the world can I find it? Do I need to remove anything in order to get to it?

Thanks a lot!
Alex

euro spec cars may not have one

if you do its in the x-over pipe IIRC behind the turbo- you can find the round plug next to the reference sensors on the back of the intake and follow it to the sensor.

I believe the O2 sensor is #39 on that diagram.

On my 87 NA, it's visible if you pop the hood and look down the exhaust manifold on the right side of the engine compartment. From the manifold it turns into a Y-pipe, then into a single pipe. Just a few inches where the exhaust pipe joins the Y-pipe is where it should be, a little plug-type thing (resembling a spark plug) with a couple of wires coming out of it.

By the way I've never heard the O2 sensor called the Lambda Sensor before. Learn something new every day, eh?

Thanks guys,

I will give it a go tomorrow...

Do you know whether its easier to access it from below or above and if I need to remove any components to reach it?

Thanks,
Alex

Here's a pic of mine, as seen from directly below the turbo itself.

Default Don't have one?!

Ok, now I know why I couldn't find the sensor... my car doesn't have one! The whole in the exhaust pipe that is meant to hold it is plugged. (see the pics). Unless I'm looking at the wrong place that is...

The question is whether there is meant to be one there in the first place.

Its an 85/86 944 turbo, bought from Germany.

Does anyone know whether it is meant to have one and, if it does, where it is meant to be plugged into?

Many thanks!
