New 968 ... a few questions
Just picked up a '95 968, have a few questions about some things I need to sort out on it...
Where do you purchase the cam chain tensioner pads?? I'm gonna need to do that as well as new belts/rollers/possible H2Opump
What's really weird is that the firewall has a "split seam" right near the master cylinder...i've never seen anything like it, i guess the best way to describe it would be when you press the clutch in, the entire firewall near the master cylinder flexes, causing the clutch pedal to feel extremely stiff, and i'm sure its not engaging/disengaging properly. You can visually see a split seam, as if the firewall was made of two peices that came apart....has anyone ever heard of this happening, it seems very odd to me...
thanks
Mike

You can get the upper pad pretty cheap from a number of sources. I got mine from 944online.com. The top pad takes a lot more abuse than the bottom pad, but I'd be inclined to replace that as well, if I could find it.
Has anyone found the bottom pad as a single part? Please let us know.

My understanding on the pads is that it's the same part, top and bottom. 944.105.509.00
I haven't inspected or replaced mine yet, but it's on the to do list...

A note about the H2O pump: Don't quote me, but I have reason to believe the 968 H2O pump will actually say "944" on it, but it is NOT the same pump as a 944 pump. A 944 pump will NOT work.

Can you shoot some pics of the split in the firewall? This seems to be showing up more as these cars age. I think it is more prevalent in cars with track time. Threshold braking is hard on the parts...
There is a procedure out there on how to change the pads. Make sure you get the cam timing right when going back together. These engines are sensitive to cam timing.

I did the cam pad swap twice (once on each 968). It's fairly straightforward but it's not exactly easy.
I have the 968 WSM pdf and that was an OK guide on doing the job. Watch out for:
- don't drop the little banjo bolt / washer for the oil J-tube for the variocam... the bolt will fall into where is will never be retrieved.
- DON'T FORGET to make TDC marks on the cams and somewhere corresponding on the head
- Don't break the hall sender, it is fragile
- replace the chain too!
