Well, it is finally happening, my rack is starting to leak pretty bad. What is the best place to buy a rebuilt rack? Would you guys reccomend a regular rebuilt one or only a rebuilt ZF rack? I found a site that has good prices called steeringrack.com, anyone used them? I am not wanting to spend another fortune, as this car is currently killing me, on things breaking recently.

I've got a leaking rack you can have for cheap ($25+shipping?) to rebuild/use as a core deposit. It's got a set of used old tierods on it and I've got a set of used new style tie rods kicking around if you want those ones.

Yes the rebuild kit is fairly inexpensive and rebuilding it yourself isnt terrible, just a bit time consuming since you will probably need to create a couple of tools to knock out and install some of the seals. If you are pretty mechanically oriented you will be able to do it. There are good instructions out there for doing it.

I would consider that, however my rack feels sloppy as well. So, I would like one that is known to be good and that the actually mechanism is not worn on.

I've heard a lot of good things about Griffiths racks on this board, but I've no personal experience with them.
I put in a rebuilt rack from Zims Autotechnik about 2 years and 15K miles ago and have not had any rack leaks (knock wood).
They say you are supposed to flush the system before putting in a new rack, so maybe that's why people have problems with rebuilt racks.

Go with the Griffiths, most others are 'rebuilt' which normally means a clean, paint and seal replacement. You really don't know how long they will last and most are only warrantied for a year. Although not the hardest job on a 944, this is not a job you will want to do again soon.
The Griffiths is tottaly 'remanufactured'. All worn components are replaced! I was very happy with my purchase from them, the rack looked like a new item.
I went through the same decision a month ago, looked at all the options and the Griffiths was the best. You should definately replace the power steering tank at the same time (cheap). This has a filter in it that gets very dirty and is almost impossible to clean. Buy new not used. I also purchased all the hoses, but this is not neccessary unless yours are leaking or cracked. I was told that as I was replacing the rack anyway, I should at least replace the ps hose that passes under the engine as this is prone to failure.
