Devon,

the nice 951's Ive seen have been in the 9-12K range, thats what I was going on. Even if you buy a 951 for 8K, and then buy an Ls1 944 for 9K, the timing belt, water pump and basic 951 maintenance will add up to be more cash in the long run than the ls1 944 will be. Ls1 parts are cheap and can be found anywhere. Plus, you are just a cam and $300 away from 400+ hp on the ls1. The 951 will make 400hp but at that power you are already double the stock output of the motor and it will cost you some serious cash....

what about, head job that a good quality polish head like lindsey racing $600.00 new race spring will really bring some real hp to a 8v 944?

The core problem is that the turbo drivetrain (driveshaft, tranny, I think the clutch is even bigger) is much more suited to handle the ls1 output.

I should be netted at about 250bhp on my S2 once I get my cat delete made and my chip installed. So far I have just a B&B 2.5" catback. With the cat delete, I will have a full 2.5" stainless header-back exhaust. Cat deletes alone have given 8whp to S2's on a dyno. I should be over 210whp when I'm done.

Looking at the 1/4 time estimator on line, this power would net me a 13.99 in the 1/4 if everything fell just right, and my 0-60 would be down to about 5.0-5.2 or so.

There isn't much you can do to an S2 for cheap to make power. Basically an exhaust and a chip. MY cat delete is going to cost me 216 bucks total after I figure in 130 dollars for stainless flanges to make it completely bolted in and not hacked and welded. This also includes the 2.5" stainless pipe and shop fees. Not bad compared to SFR wanting over like 500 bucks!

woa...calm down! 8V cars dont make power! its just that simple. if you want to run an 8v motor you are probably looking at 220 or so MAX. why even bother?

IMO discussing the most powerful 944 is kind of missing the point of the car. It is all about balance and while motor obviously is part of that so too is the suspension, brakes and the skill of the driver. I like more power thats why I'm stuffing an LS1 into a 968. However for fun methinks racing in class around Mosport could not be beat.

exactly. Porsche's aren't straight line cars anyway. Handling is where it's at....but, for those who want turning AND straight line performance, the best dollar per horsepower spent is in an LS1/LS2/LS6

Don't ask me why I'm doing this;

You make NA HP three ways; RPM, induction, and compression. All are expensive. If you spend a ton on lightened parts, stronger valve train bits, better induction, and then bump the compression up a few clicks with some custom pistons and a milled head, you'll make some decent power. Add a tuneable engine management system and your set. Should only cost you $8-10 large.

Probably one of, if not THE, most powerful NA out there is David Finch's SCCA GT2 944. He has won a bag of national titles with that old war horse. Carbs, some other trans (Nissan?) mounted to the back of the engine. All plastic. Not a lot of Porsche left to it... really.

The best way to make an NA faster is not to use the brakes, right Joe?!
