Question engine overheating...

during idling and stop-and-go traffic on a warm day. The fans work, although they are noisy (rattle a bit). Can the fans be partially worn out? Does it make a big difference to upgrade from 3 blades to the 6 blades model?
I don't think it's the thermostat, because it cools down when I resume speed.
comments? thanks

could be a plugged or covered radiator. thats what mine was. I upgraded to the late fans but Im not sure if they pull more air, or are just quieter. if the temps go down at speed id look at radiator...

I got a new rad, new hoses, new tank, new pump and now the temperature never gets over the half.

first thing and the cheapest thing i would do is bleed the coolant, coolant bleeder screw is located on the upper radiator hose attachment. jack the car up, 12 mm wrench, fill up coolant, and burp it.

air in the coolant is a possibility- I have tiny coolant leaks. I already tried purging air though.

It made a huge difference on my 83 but it might just be our hotter climate. The 6-blade fan upgrade was the best results/$$$ I ever did for the car. Your problem, since it is new, is probably due to trapped air, a dirty cooling system, or a bug covered radiator. No matter what you find, the 6-blade fan upgrade is worth every penny IMO.

Agreed. Just be sure to reposition the coolant hoses or these fans will quickly eat them up.

Or buy the later hose that moves it further away from the fans.

which hoses are we talking about? the thick, passenger-side rad-to-water-pump?
