Default autocross tire: v700 or bf goodrich gforce r1? tried search...

I've heard nothing but good things about both of these tires, except that the v700 are more properly suited to autox (heat up quicker) but that the gforce r1s last longer. If I get the v700s shaved (they will never be driven in the wet anywhere), the r1s will cost about $60 more for the set (but if they last any longer, it would be worth it). Without shaving, the r1s would cost about $120 more for the set.

I have been autocrossing on my 944 all year at every event I can get to, and beating plenty of guys using race tires on my 15" yoko es100s (I won 2nd in ES at the Virginia Coventry games in Danville over the weekend, yay), but I am ready to move up to 16" phonies and sticky tires for the NC autox championship.

Am I correct in assuming that I would need to get the v700s shaved?

Thoughts/suggestions?

If you move up to 16's, you won't be able to run in ES anymore - you'll be in CSP with the Miatas, Solstices, and turbo TTs. Of course, that's exactly what I'm doing, too.

i have a 944 with Victoracers that I just can't beat with my ES100's, so I've never won ES around here. I'm not sure that he should be in ES with the Victoracers though...

You can run whatever tire compound you want in ES here.

I was going to get 16" phone dials. You can get them as a factory option on my car (89 NA), so they're legal for stock class. Just like an LSD. Or M030 stuff. It's kind of cheap, really.

how will 16/s benefit your autocross...if anything, you will get quicker acceleration with a 15 inch wheel using an overall shorter tire, unless youre going to a big brake setup

I want 8" of rubber in the rear. See "autox pics-how to almost hit the timing equipment" for clarification. I'm on 205/60/15s now. Definitely not doing any brake work for ES sake. The new tires will be 50 and 45 - less tall to make up for the bigger inside diamter. I doubt it will change my final drive any.
Yeah, I guess I could try to find some really skinny 205/xx/15 tires, but I'm not too sure they are out there. And again, I want 8" of rubber.

16" phonies will slow you down. Keep the 15's on track and 16" for the road. 225/50 or possibly 225/45 are the size to run even on 7" wheels. 205's Good god no wonder you do alot of sliding around.

I have used Victoracers when autocrossing years ago. Nice tires for autocross as they are fast, but cost effective. The toyos I run now are better track tires since they last longer than the Victoracers, but take more are not as sticky in an autocross.

Well my es100s still have plenty of good life left on them. You're talking about me having to buy a set of 15" race tires (which means they will be the way cheap avon tech RAs, because I don't care how much they suck, $120/tire for sticky tires is impossible to turn down) AND a new set of 16" street tires, which will run probably $130/tire too. And then I have perfectly good ES100s that I have nothing to do with.

Are you saying the 16" wheels will be slower because of outside diameter or because I won't be able to get any wheelspin or the car will push or what? If I am running 205/60/15 right now, I can't imagine that a 225/50/16 or 245/45/16 will be any wider outside diameter.

Thanks for the input; it's appreciated.

The larger diameter wheels weigh more and the weight is farther from the center of the wheel so it will require more force to get them moving and to stop them. For an NA Id just put some 225 45 or 225 50 15 R comps on all 4 corners. If it were legal to run 16x8 all around (I dont think that was an option) you could run 245s on all 4 corners which might be worth it because youll be adding grip.

As far as which compound Id go for whichever comes in 225 45 15. That way you get the shortest gearing and better acceleration. I think ultimately the R1 will be faster but its probably also more $$$.

+1 on the 225 45 15. Seems to be the right size. Most autox I've been to lately seem to put the car right at the top end of 2nd and on the low end I haven't found the need to put it down into 1st, yet.

Well I don't have the cash to spend on TWO new sets of tires. I'll just have to rely on the raw, bonecrushing torque of the 2.7L.

I've hit the rev limiter a few times with the 205/60/15. All the autocrosses in NC are on really poor traction surfaces (busted old runways, like Danville, which might as well be covered in marbles), so I think I'll be okay with a ton of rubber at the loss of a little grunt. I spin the tires exiting corners in 2nd all the time if I get on the throttle too soon.

But again, it comes down to cash. Yeah, the 15s will be cheaper. But one set of 16s will be cheaper than a set of 15s AND a set of 16s, and I already have the 16" wheels (thanks Tierce).

If you don't have an LSD, then the wheel spin exitting corners isn't du to power.

But for your tire choice I think the kumhos are the way to go. I haven't seen many running the BFGs but the Kumhos are pretty quick.

Danville airport as in Danville VA? If so come on out to VIR sometime. Its always nice to have other 924/944s out there! The track is about 10 minutes from the airport!

Yes, Danville, VA. PM'd you.

Yeah, no LSD. I was aware that was part of the reason for that.
You guys shave the kumhos for running on dry, correct? Does tire rack do a good job? Am I going to be left with enough tread to last awhile?
