Default Curiosity strikes. Turning a sunroof into a moonroof?

Has anyone done it? This would involve taking the solid sunroof and replacing it with one made out of tempered glass. I imagine if you had some humongous piece of glass with some sort of steel mesh backing you could do it. You'd have to cut it to exactly the right shape, make sure it has the right curve to it, then trim it out and add all of the sunroof hardware attach it to your car properly. Of course, it won't make your car any safer and you'll have all that much more glass to clean, but it would be a pretty cool thing to have on a daily driver

It would be an awfully large sunroof of course..

I got to see my first Saratoga in Dan P's car this summer and I was really impressed, I can't believe they don't make these anymore!

$800 would place the Saratoga at number four on my list of goodies. Just that, after searching around for a bit, it looks like they can very easily go for a lot more.

How about a thick piece of Plexiglass with stock sunroof seal, and attachment hardware?

wont have the contour. i sold one a few years ago and bought a set of konis with the $$.

If the car was stolen with the glass roof instead of the konis the fight with the insurance co would probably have been a little easier. shocks are maintenance, a sunroof is not factory. both = $0.

Is there really a contour? I will check my existing sunroof when I get home. Certain plastics can be heated to form shapes. How about heating a sheet on the sunroof to get the contour?

You could do it clear-headlight style with a piece of lexan placed on top of the metal sunroof and put into an oven...

*edit*
so basically what he just said..

Stock sunroof panels are fiberglass, not metal.

I was thinking of doing that with the lexan. Only thing is, where does one get it, and who on earth has an oven big enough to put it in. Of course, you could always sit there for a couple of hours with a heat gun..

Mine is apparently aluminum, as there are scratches from my manual conversion and the paint chips to show metal underneath...besides it weighs too much to be FG, not enough to be steel (not magnetic)
