Is the battery box area on the 944 supposed to be body coloured or black? I looked at a car recently, but could not recall if it was in fact painted black (colour of car was light grey) or just lots of gunk over the years.
If it is supposed to be body colour, then maybe some work was done in the area since they are prone to rust if not cared for.
Thanks!

Should be body color.
The black may be an indication of repair in the area or the owner used a sealer as a preventitive maintenance measure.

Should be body color. It is popular to repair hole from a leaky battery and then use truck bed liner (black) as a extra protective coat. I did the same in my car. These cars have weak metal under the battery so the acid eats it quickly which in turn results in a hole where water can get into the car. Its not uncommon in these cars.
