got the tools today, have the engine at TDC and the flywheel lock on. Now I need to remove the crankshaft pulley.... but....
What direction does the nut turn? since the engine turns clockwise (from the view point of standing at the front), so I could justify it having reverse threads, but the instructions don't say anything about that. So what direction do I turn it before I put a big cheater bar on my breaker bar and really break something...
Thanks

People are probably starting to get bored with this, but...
I have everything pretty much torn down. I've swapped the water pump (easy, once you're there).
Now I'm replacing the cam seals and the crank seals.
I've got the woodruff key out of the crank, but how the check to you get the seal outer seal out? (best I can tell, there is one on the outside and one behind the oil pump drive gear, but I assume I don't need to replace that one)...
I guess I need to go buy a seal puller.

Hey;
Do the kit, and maybe a water pump while you're at it. Shaft seals anyone?
I'm in Binghamton. Done it once or twice myself. Might even have most of the parts on the shelf.![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

It's all going back together (ok, we're kind of slow)... We have the seals replaced, new water pump on, the timing belt on and tensioned, now we are putting on the balance shaft belt. The lower one is easy to get in the right place, but I can't find the notch at 1 o'clock that indicates where the mark on the upper pulley goes. Any other methods for getting the upper balance shaft gear timed correctly?
Hopefully, this thing will fire up (and not leak like a sieve) tonight.

I'm in the middle of doing the exact same thing to the race car. It's the first time I've done it on a 944. When you pulled the crank pulley, did you use a gear puller?
Thanks,

On the bigger balance shaft pulley, I was able to wiggle it back and forth. But I used my big screwdriver (wompin' stick), to gently pry on either side until it slid off.
It wasn't two bad. Getting the woodruff key out was tough, use a big pair of wire cutters to grab the key and pry it out. Worked great.
It was a great feeling to have it crank up right away. The engine is much smoother also, I think the balance shafts were a couple of teeth off or something.
We also ditched the platinum plugs that were in it for cheapo Champions (correct spec) and it starts up right away instead of having to crank it and try several times...
