Turn signal fix revisited
A couple of weeks ago, someone fixed their noncanceling turn signal by wrapping the canceling tang on the wheel w/electrical tape. My left signal would not cancel and more than once I could be mistaken for one of those bluehairs I see on I75 going from Ohio to Florida w/ the signal on.
Anyway, when you pull the wheel there is a black plastic tang that sticks down into the signal switch and it flips a white plastic arm as you turn the wheel and this cancels the signal. The white plastic arm will wear a groove in the black tang over time resulting in too much clearance.
I was getting ready to do the tape fix, but I had cheap tape that would not stick to the tang so I went looking for another fix. I was afraid that the tape would fall off in the switch and tear up somethingelse.
What I did was cut a piece of aluminum out of a beer can (this is a two can fix, so cut the 1st one up as you get into the second can) The metal is soft and you can just wrap it around the tang. I secured it with a drop of JB Weld and that was that.

i never had a problem electrical tape.
compared to tape, where a wrap or two is all that's needed, as big as your fix is, i'd be afraid it might keep the wheel from turning at an inoportune time.

Nope, the metal is only the thickness of about 2 wraps of tape and its not coming off to gumm the works up like tape. Tape seems kinda 1/2 *** to me!

Wow there sure are a lot of critics here...
IMHO the Al can route seems much less half-assed than tape. Yes, tape gums up the works and is obviously much less wear-resistant than aluminum.
I've got a quick question, tho: why does my right turn sig cancel but my left turn sig stay on? Could the tang be unevenly worn?

Yes, same problem I fixed here. Living in East Tennessee I could have just left this alone and not fixed it. The majority of people here don't use them anyway; being as how it's nobodies damn business where they're going!!

Here's a link to my tape fix. (Actually I heard about it here and just took pictures when I did it.)

I like the aluminum idea, chrly. The tape improved things for awhile, but I had to use more layers than I had planned and 3 years on I find myself cancelling the signal by hand again most of the time. Next time I try this I am looking for something more solid...I was thinking aluminum trailer tape, but I think the beer can is a great idea.
Does yours cancel all the time now? Thanks for posting the pics.

Without state inspections, I was able to drive DS/P SCCA Autox MGB to school, slicks, straight pipe and race harnesses and all. I'm East Tennessean, schooled at UT but flaked and finished at ETSU.
Back to the thread- I took my wheel off to replace with proto-lookalike. The off switch is flaked so no amount of cans or tape will fix.

Nice write-up with pics
I may go with aluminum as well, seems like it would last longer. I was originally planning on using that metal tape stuff, but i think aluminum can material would wear better.
'course, I expect to be flamed because I'll be using an RC Cola can 'cuz I don't drink beer
Fixed it for you

I think the entire plastic piece unscrews pretty easily from the wheel and you should be able to replace it from another wheel, assuming you can actually get a good used one.
