Default Speedo/odo sensors?

Where exactly do the speedometer (and odometer) connect to the engine/drivetrain? Since they crapped out right before my car died, I think it'd be a good place to look for a cause of trouble.

Bonus question: where's the water temp sensor? May as well see about fixing that sucker too.

Coolio. Thanks!

And anyone caring to draw a connection between the loss of speedomoeter and teeth-chattering loss of power please do so ...

Nope. The electricals were fine and still are. At least they seem to be.

As I drove down the highway, I began to hear a horrible grinding noise from somewhere in the drivetrain. Eventually it failed completely, immobilizing the car, but before that happened the speedometer and odometer crapped out. I very strongly feel there's a connection there.

By the way, is the speedometer electronic, or some kind of direct mechanical linkage?

Sorry, '87 944 NA. And automatic, just to complicate things (tranny in the rear).

Late cars it's electric, early it's driven by a cable. Cable at the tranny could of come loose, or you could of just lost your tranny.

You could of lost the cv axles though too. Other guys on here are more the expert in that area then I am.

Yeah I'll be poking around back there soon, hopefully in the next few days.

My list of possibilities are CV, torque converter, transmission.

By the way, what about the odometer? Does it work off a signal from the speedo? Or is there a separate sensor for it somewhere?

Isn't ring and pinion failure pretty common.

Ring and pinion ... aren't those parts of a standard transmission? Mine's an automatic. Or is it part of the differential assembly?
