Default broken head bolt = super pissed

Today I got the last few parts I needed from the dealer so I took off work and did a bunch of work on my engine. also got a ride in a supercharged 2000 Viper GTS. WOW.. I have pics if anyone is interested

after replacing all bearings and seals I noticed one of the head bolts (where the temp sensor is) is broken off.. flush with the block. this coming from a "mint 40K mile" shortblock.

Now I tried drilling it and removing with an extractor ...of course the first time i break the extractor its in this spot. to say the least I'm not happy this wasn't disclosed to me when the engine was sold...even more pissed I didn't notice until now.. i guess at this point its my fault for not noticing

All I would have had to do was bolt the head/manifolds/accessories on and finally have my engine in before the end of teh week

what do you guys suggest I do to get this bolt removed?

The best way especially with a broken extractor already there is to weld a nut on. The concentrated heat helps to brake the bolt loose.

Take it to an extraction specialist. There is a shop near me called the "hole shop" that deals only with things like this and I am sure there is a place near you like that though you will have to look pretty hard. If anyone tried to remove a head stud, they will tell you you are wasting your time trying to get it out because I am willing to bet money you will destroy your block and still not successful. Pay the $60-$120 and save yourself a lot of time and aggrevation to end up spending the money on another block. Trust me on this one.

Hey legoland, totally agree with you on that... I'm taking it to the machine shop i work at and seeing if my boss can fix it for me. oh the headstuds are all ok, the broken bolt is the one that goes on the front right corner of the head right where the temp sensor is.

I'm really crossing my fingers my block isn't destroyed... I can't believe I didn't notice the head stud was broken.. I've had this engine since January..

The bolt for the water passage is much different than the head stud. That broken piece is much softer than the head studs and has much less torque. Most likely its from the rust breaking the bolt off in the first place. You probably won't need a specialty shop but if I had the engine out already, I would truck it down to a shop and pay the money.

Luis, I dug the info up online and sounds like the same shop. I have not had to go to them for 2 years since my sister's BMW had a spark plug pop out from stripped threads done by the last owner. They repaired the thread I believe by using time sert and anything repairs done with part on car is $225 so if you remove the part is much cheaper.

Working with these old parts scares the hell out of me. When removing the testpipe bolds on the 951 my heart was in my throat and CLINK they all came off correctly. Thank god.

I'm glad Porsche came to their senses with the 968 and replaced those bolts with short little studs and nuts. A little squirt of PB and they never ever cause headaches.

Once you extract the broken bolt and empty out the hole, I suggest using a stud instead of a bolt. Go for stainless steel too (more expensive but it won't corrode). That's what I'm gonna do to Roger's 951.

Careful, I cracked teh block trying to get that broken bolt out. The outside half of where that bolt goes in just broke off.

There is a product called Kroil by Kano Laboratories. Only available by calling the company direct. It makes PB blaster look like water. It will save you a lot of headaches when working on these old cars.

Well..won't have a chance to do anything about this until next week..

if i end up needing a new block .. it's not going to happen. I can't afford it. then i'll have to sell my dream car before even driving it ..after dumping too much money in it
