Oil pressure
Hey guys just had a couple of quick questions:
I have an 86 n/a for the record
After not having driven my car for a day or more, when I go to start it, it seems like too much time has passed from the engine having started to having the oil pres. gauge jump up to 5 bar. Seems like it takes about... um 2 maybe 3.5 seconds? I will have to time it tomorow or something, but it is worrying me. Could it be doing any damage the the internals to have them be oil starved during this time? Oil pump is not being starved there is sufficient oil, so, is the pump dying? ok *phew* that was a long one.
and finally my n00b question.
cold engine runs at 5 bar oil press. (idle)
warm engine(at op temp) idles at about 2-2.5 bar
warm engine on highway at like 2300-2400 (cant remember) is at 5 bar
warm engine on highway at about 2550-3000+ is at 4-4.5 bar?????
i repeated the last 2 steps several times the other day and was perplexed, but dissmissed it as being normal... so yeah Normal?
ok now time to go for a nice drive
thanks

Can't answer question one, though I do know that happens to me immediately following an oil change.
Oil pressure should change once it's warm - at idle, it should hover around 2/2.5/3, but should bump up to 4/5 when you're on the gas.
And, because I know someone will say it...clean the connectors on the gauges and sensors if it is really acting weird.

Having been through a few early cars I would check your OPRV for scoring on the piston or sleeve. 3-5 seconds to hit full oil pressure isn't a concern to me actually. If everything else oil pressure wise is good I would just consider it a quirk of these cars. If your lifters are noisy at startup and it goes away quickly, drive the car and enjoy. Eventually you will probably convert to the the 1-piece OPRV made for the early cars. It eliminates the wear factor that the old 3-piece OPRV seems to develop over time.

i have that issue with my 924s and during the tear down of my engine i found substantial scoring on the inside of my oil pump which caused it to loss its prime while off for awhile.

Oh and a side note, it doesnt slowly go up to full. Start car(during longer cranking too) gauge goes to ... like 1 bar or JUST below. and then 2-3 seconds later it purks upto full.
oh and side note I am using castrol gtx high mileage 10w-30
btw kuhl your 951 is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i want it

10w 30 is too low.... in the summer I would never run less than a Xw50 oil.
And if anyone questions that I will attack you with my razor thin #2 rod bearing!

I use 10w40 in the winter and 20w50 in the summer.
I don't use synthetic because I'm breaking my engine in from rebuilding. (Spun the #2 rod bearing last summer).
Unless I lived in Alaska I don't think I would ever put 10w30 in a 944.

Purolators and such also have the check valve, just look inside and look inside a regular filter, you can see the flap.
I would buy 6-7 quarts. Sometimes I've ended up needing a full 6 quarts.
