Default Anyone recently have their car painted? $

I was wondering if anyone knew how much money I should expect to **** away when I decide to paint my car.
I definitely want a couple steps up from a Maaco job, but I'm not looking for car show quality either. Just something nice that will look good.

Anyone have a ballpark estimate?

Not sure on the color either... I'm kind of leaning towards a rusty orange.... or maybe a deeeeep purple. Or maybe even something normal like silver or green.

The prices will vary depending on what kind of paint you want.
There are many horror stories in many car forums about macco, but in the end it all depends on the person whos going to paint your car. MOST macco have inexperienced painters which lead to crap paintjobs. So even if it is a few steps up if you want great paint that lasts expect to pay over 2000$. There are some who end up with decent paintjobs from macco, I guess you just have to prep your car for them. There was a good website on how to prep your 944 for painting I think it was the 944 faqs site.

Although some people dont like earlschieb, the one my friend went to did a decent job for 600$. He did the prep work himself and brought it in for a spray.

conclusion - you get what u pay for.

Deep purple looks good! like a burgundy color, I seen it on a boxter once, Looked very nice. ( not sure if its stock or respray.)

wow, thats um... RED.

Would you think about painting another Rennlisters car (wink) if paid for all supplies and time and even helped out to learn a little on the way?

I got an estimate from a Philadelphia Body shop, the name escapes me, an it was for $3100 with prep, 1 base and 1 clear. Thats for my Slate Gray Metallic.

I got a $450 Earl Scheib job for the 944 I had. I did all the prep work and disassembly myself before-hand, so the job came out very well. Not show quality, but very nice for driving around or whatever. It even looked good from an inch away (i.e. it was not a "3-foot paint job). If you forego the useless "integrated clear coat" you could lower the price more. I'll post pics tomorrow if I can find them.

My 944 is a Maaco job. I did the prep work myself and brought it in for painting.

It's not a perfect job either, but well worth the money I didn't spend. Every place around here quoted me $5-8k for the job (stupid Porsche markup!). I used their top-end two-stage paint, and it's held up fairly well over five years, although the car is garaged. My only real complaint are that it is more easily chipped by stones. There is some minor orange peel that could have been resolved had I wetsanded it, but at the time I just didn't do it.

So Maaco doesn't necessarily mean bad. Not to say they're all going to be great, either.

Click the link in my sig for pictures.

That said, I'm not sure I'd go that route again. Next time, I'll do it myself.

BB.

3100 is pretty good- the price i would charge plus your gas would be more.

I guess 3100 is probably the way to go... but I am concerned. I'm gonna do some research and probably do it my self. I hear its all in the prep work on how well it will turn out.

I paid $800 for mine and they did an okay job for not removing the door handles, trim and weather stripping. The only trim that was painted over was the door handles, B-pillar posts (which now look better in gloss black), and the sunroof seal. Everything else looks fine.

My car has some cheap-o paintjob on it that has chipped alot. I'm not sure how long its had the paint since I bought it like this, but I'm definitly doing a respray at some point. My problem though is that the paint is so bad I will have to strip it all off if I want a good paintjob.

Does anyone know if its possible to strip the galvanizing off the car? I would like to avoid that but Im going to need to get alot of the old crappy paint off.

you can sand the galvanization off, thing to do would be sand it to the original paint job then primer and paint.
