Default pre-muffler...

what is the purpose of the pre-muffler? like the old resonators? for backpressure or just sound control?

I was thinking of removing mine, putting on a hi-flow cat and hi flow muffler...@ 2.5 inch or 2.75 inch piping thru all.

The stock unit is a combination resonator and catalyst. You can put a high-flow cat on there and might see a few HP gained, but it will probably be louder. And like Jesse said, keep it 2.5" or you'll lose torque.
