Default Balance Shaft Sleeve Replacement

After a front end reseal job over the winter, I was still weeping a bit of oil from the lower balance shaft area. The first time I didn't change the balance shaft sleeves since they looked okay to me and I was feeling cheap at the time. So feeling ambitious, I dug in again. I cannot get the new balance shaft sleeve to slide onto the balance shaft. The old part slides on fairly easily. Any suggestions? Since the old part doesn't seem to have much of a groove I'm tempted to just reuse it but of course I'm worried that this was the cause of the weeping. And yes, I did remember the mylar washer!

Anyone have a similar issue?

you could try putting the sleeve into the freezer for a few hours and then see if it will slide on any easier.

Can you have someone measure the sleeve ID and shaft OD with a micrometer? This will tell you how far off the sleeve is. If only a half thousandth or so undersized, try some emery paper (400 grit) on the inner diameter of the sleeve. You should be able to remove enough to get it to slide on.

Actually I would need to heat the sleeve to expand it - I thought about that but the proximity to the mylar washer will melt it. I did a rough measurement of the old and the new sleeve and they were close. I will try to open the sleeve up some more and try again. Thanks for the input.

I would either toss it and buy a new one, or ask Paragon products about the problem. If it's defective I would think they'd send you a new one.

I will call - I wasn't sure if this was expected or a defective part. The bad news is that it takes over a week for parts to arrive from Paragon for me!

Before you grind on the new sleeve check to see if you have a burr or edge where the keyway slot is. I had troubles with new crankshaft sleeves on two engines and had to file down the edges of the keyway slot because they got deformed when the key was either put in or taken out.
