Yes, you will need a standalone, a Flex Fuel sensor, different injectors and new fuel lines. Possibly a larger fuel pump too. And a wideband O2 sensor to tune it.

You could probably do it with only a custom chip from someone, but then it would be E85 and nothing but. A standalone with a Flex Fuel sensor would let you run any combination of E85 and gas that you want to.

 

Re: ethanol ... Check your manual if you have one. I don't have mine in front of me but I'm pretty sure it says E85 is just fine with no mods necessary ('87 944). In fact ethanol is often blended in with regular gas anyway.

You don't get much gain, though, since I believe ethanol gets worse mileage.

 

I think the manual in my '83 says up to 10 percent ethanol is fine, but to only use it when necessary.

Too bad Sunoco Ultra 94 is 10% ethanol.

 

I paid $3.29 for 93 yesterday

but my tank is nowhere near 20 gallons - I put in more like 12 gallons and it looks like my gas guage is almost full*

*disclaimer: I think I've got a ground loose back there as my tach has been acting funny ever since I got it reinstalled with the rest of my interior

My manual also says 87 octane is fine, by the way.

 

I run 87 octane on a chiped 86 N/A but our gas it better than yours :P

No you cant run E85 without mods on a 944. E85 means 85 percent Ethanol and the rest is gas. Gas usually has 10% max.

 

Vehicles running on E85 use 30% more E85 than gasoline. E85s octane is between 102-108 octane. If you planned to run on only E85 you could order custom pistons that give you 12:1 or higher compression (remember that higher compression actually results in better mileage), use an MSD Ignition (a stock ignition won't like that much static compression) and do a custom tune, you'd have about 10-15% more power and use only a tiny bit more E85 than before you modified the engine from its gasoline state.

Yup. $3.79 for 92 octane in Portland currently. And my Audi gulps the stuff. I've actually been driving the track car more as it gets double the gas mileage!
