Default 944 S2 or 968?

ok, now that I have my $500 944 going (ref below thread)
https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/342112-heads-up-almost-free-car-in-davis-ca.html
I'm going to clean up some of the electrical things that don't work and put 'er up for sale. I'm also going to sell my 86 944 which has been an awesome running car.
Now my next venture will either be a S2 (clean like this one)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...8856&rd=1&rd=1
or a 968 (doubt it would be this nice but like this)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...7722&rd=1&rd=1

From you "seasoned" guys... which do you feel would be a better choice and why? The car will be used as a daily driver, no track, no racing, no modding. Price = under $7000 (if that's possible)

I have a friend who is a Porsche mechanic who says he won't work on anything that ends in an 8! I would go with the S2 if it were me.

The 968 IMO has better styling. Go with something different than what you have now. Plus, the 6 speed transmission on the 968 is awesome.

I don't think that you will get a nice 968 under $7K, even an S2 is going to be at that mark. Will you have some extra cash to put into it? If not I say go for the S2, not as much power as the 968 but pretty close. JMO.

Nice looking car Josh. Is that a "going price" for the mileage? I was hoping to find a 100k or less mi. car but may be looking in the clouds with my price range.
The 968s I've found seem to be a bit high too.

I think you guys may be right...

Personally, I think the S2 is more of a value -- but 968 has the more modern look. The 968 has more 968-specific parts that makes it tad more expensive to maintain.

If resale value isn't an issue, look into the high-mileage market (160k miles+). You regularly see high-mileage S2 in the $4k-$5k range in California (I sold one for $4k last summer, and I had other sellers in competition). I've even seen high-mileage S2 cabs in the $6k range.

I think a 968 would be out of the sub-$7k range. A high-mileage 968 would be in the $8k range. Here's one near you for $9k: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/car/331877619.html. I acquired a high-mileage 968 cab last year for $10k.

With high-mileage cars, you need to look carefully at past maintenance. If you know what you're looking for, you'll find well-maintained cars that other buyers are shying away from b/c of the mileage.

.
This is the kind of ugly info I was looking for. ouch.
I was hoping someone would tell me the 968 NEVER needs belts/pump.

Reality check - when you are ready to buy another car the "right" car will come along. Look for both and pick the best.

I have to get rid of either my 951 or S2 and cant decide which should go. my solution: put em both up and whatever I am left with I keep. Same for you.

either way you win.

Above is a nice one with full belt service already complete. Love the color combo black/linen! Would make for a fun drive home. I personally would buy the lowest mileage example you can afford that has good history. Doing a belts and pump isn't rocket science on this car. Take your time and it will go smooth. There are deals out there..

It's not hard to find bargains in California -- lots of cars getting kicked out because people can't afford parking spaces to keep their older cars. Be patient -- but have cash ready.

Who said ship it? Low ball him, fly in drive home. Be the best fun you ever had! Not alot of demand for older Porsches. I have the cheapest 928 in the US for sale from what autotrader and cars.com says and all I get is tirekickers. I'm so fed up with the 15-20 calls/emails a day that I would be willing to accept any reasonable offer. If someone said Ill pick it up for $xxxx tomorrow than were dealing. I bet hes in the same boat. Offer a cash deal keep it simple and let him know your serious and I bet your could get $800 off. Worth a shot?

My 90 S2 has 68k miles and I didnt get much serious action on it when i posted it on this forum a few weeks ago.

People say get the lowest mileage car, who can get lower than 68k?
People say get the car in the best shape. who can get a S2 with all original paint?
Same with dash cracks.
But, a little rust on the front fender and people run. I wonder how many thousands more i will be able to get if i spend the $500 to fix the rust.
