Default What is "Normal operation" for the Sun Roof Motor?

My sunroof motor acts like a "stepper motor" taking about one step or jump per second - is this normal? Its an 86 944. The roof is not working but I hear a click ffrom the drive when I press the roof open switch (I assume it's a relay clicking). I pulled the roof opening mechanism out and hooked it up to a 12 volt power supply - the motor does not turn smoothly and constantly but jumps a partial turn about once a second as long as power is supplied. It does the same in reverse direction when the polarity is reversed. Is this how it should act or should I just get a new motor/drive unit? It would take a very, very long time for the roof to open or close if this is how it is supposed to work - it just does not seem "right".
Thanks for any help - I'm trying to bring a previously sadley negelected 944 back to life.

I wonder how hard it would be to fab metal gears so stripping wouldn't happen...

I'd be worried about metal gears making it more likely to break other, more expensive things.
